We're investing in health 🩺

Last week, we announced an investment of $30 million to bolster our health and care capability and meet critical skills needs in Victoria. 🏥

We'll use the funds to upgrade existing infrastructure, deliver new equipment and build on our Bundoora campus' state-of-the-art technology so that our students have access to simulated real-world medical environments where they can develop the skills they need to be job ready. 🩻

Sound waves create a mist that can act like a ‘plant sunscreen’! 🔊🌿 Researchers have developed a new way to coat fragile surfaces (like plant leaves) using high-frequency sound waves and created a fine mist that can act like a plant sunscreen!

Conventional coating techniques often require high temperatures or harsh chemicals making them unsuitable for delicate surfaces such as living tissue, soft plastics or emerging electronic materials. Using soundwaves, researchers were able to form and deposit a UV-blocking layer coating within minutes without heating or damaging the surface. 🎉

Cemeteries are public spaces, so how can we make the ones we rarely visit more inviting?

That’s the question central to PhD graduate Isabel Lasala’s research, which explores the transformation of forgotten places into meaningful environments that respectfully engage with death, memory and urban evolution.

Isabel will graduate at our 2026 Doctoral Degrees Graduation Ceremony in Melbourne this Wednesday.

Driven by her lifelong commitment to sustainability, PhD graduate Zhe has developed a powerful computing model that is set to revolutionise how we upgrade and improve our homes.

The model takes a holistic approach by assessing energy consumption, carbon emissions and capital cost and will help inform homeowners and policymakers on how to make smarter decisions about upgrading existing houses for a low‑carbon future.

It will allow users to simulate an existing home and test different retrofit options such as wall insulation, double-glazed windows or improved flooring to see which packages deliver a strongest overall performance across all three objectives.

“If we can improve existing houses at scale, we can make a meaningful contribution to national emissions targets whilst also improving the quality of life for households across Australia and beyond, ” said Zhe.

RMIT is a living part of the city and Greater Melbourne.

Our newly launched Living Places Plan is a flexible, responsive guide to help us make decisions about the space we occupy that best meet the evolving needs of our students, staff and the communities we serve.

From precinct activation initiatives to programming and partnerships, minor upgrades and major campus developments, the plan puts community, innovation and sustainability first, while allowing us to respond to needs not yet visible.

As part of the launch, we’ve opened the Living Places Exchange, a physical space designed to lift the plan off the page and bring the vision and goals to life.

It showcases a rotating selection of RMIT’s learning, teaching and research with real-world impact on shaping our places.

Pursuing his passion at the intersection of engineering, biology and care, PhD graduate Vijay Sisarwal is developing a plant-based biodegradable implant coating that helps support natural healing.

Traditional implants often don’t break down and therefore require secondary surgeries to be removed. This can lead to complications, including infection. The materials and coatings Vijay is researching are designed to support the natural healing process and then safely degrade, once their job is done.

“The idea of designing materials that safely degrade within the body while promoting tissue regeneration felt both scientifically challenging and socially meaningful,” said Vijay, who will graduate among 70+ PhD students at the 2026 Doctoral Degrees Graduation on 13 May.

Ever give yourself the ick thinking about how many germs exist on your phone?  🤢 RMIT researchers are working on a future where you don’t have to worry about that.

Researchers have developed a thin plastic film that tears apart viruses on contact, offering a promising new way to keep high touch surfaces such as smartphones and hospital equipment from spreading disease!

The plastic surface is textured with ultra-fine structures (nanopillars) that grab and stretch the outer shell of the virus so that it ruptures, killing the virus through mechanical force.

Unlike earlier studies on antiviral coatings, this research shows stretching rather than skewering viruses leads to a more effective kill.

The Matildas' success and growing national momentum has lead to a surge in girls soccer participation. 🦘

Now, new research has linked this growth to meaningful social and mental health benefits for teenage girls. ⚽️

In a new project, conducted by RMIT researchers with North Geelong Warriors FC captured the voices of players, parents and club officials to better understand the role of grassroots sport in adolescent wellbeing.

The findings point to a clear link between a sense of team belonging to positive mental health outcomes said research lead, Associate Professor Bronwyn Coate.

Players who reported a stronger sense of belonging were more likely to experience lower anxiety, stronger peer relationships, and higher levels of life satisfaction, meaning and purpose. The research found that wellbeing outcomes were consistent across different levels of competition, from community teams through to Community Premier League.

"In adolescence, having multiple social circles is really protective for mental health. The girls talked about their teammates as a 'second family'. That sense of belonging is incredibly powerful," said Coate.

Resist the forbidden jello! It’s actually a rapid colour-changing test that can distinguish between different strains of golden staph including those likely to be virulent and antibiotic resistant.  🤯

Researchers developed a test using tiny gold particles that behave like artificial enzymes (nanozymes) combined with short DNA molecular binders to create colour “fingerprints” unique to each strain. These fingerprints can help separate high-risk strains from others and inform next steps of care.

Congratulations to RMIT Architecture alumnus Steven Chu, Grand Prize winner of the International NOT A HOTEL Design Competition 2026.

The Founder and Creative Director of Artefact Architects won top prize for his design, 'Sound of Rain' - selected from over 1000 entries by 4250 participants across 112 countries.

Proposed for the UNESCO World Heritage Yakushima Island in Japan, Steven’s design embraces the constant rainfall on the island.

“I see the rain not as something to be managed, but the ground condition from which architecture begins. Rain becomes a collaborator that defines structure, ritual, and experience, with the architecture existing as a threshold between shelter and atmosphere, collective memory and inhabitation,” he said.

Steven graduated from RMIT with a Master of Architecture with Distinction in 2011 and currently teaches RMIT Master of Architecture Design Studios and supervises Major Project students in their thesis semester.

“It has been a privilege to be part of the School of Architecture and Urban Design as a student and as a sessional teaching staff member since 2018, and I’m incredibly grateful for RMIT’s support throughout the years – I wouldn’t be where I am today without it. This is a shared success” he said.

Is your city getting it wrong when it comes to trees? 🪾

Heatwaves are becoming increasingly frequent, especially in urban areas where heat is amplified by lots of concrete and asphalt. Luckily, there’s a simple antidote: Trees 🌳🏙️🌳

Trees do a great job at protecting us from the extreme heat our cities face, but only when there’s lots of them and they’re well cared for. ☀️

Dr Thami Croesser from our Centre for Urban Research took us through the three hurdles cities face when it comes to urban forestry. 🌆🍃
