Monash GPS

Monash GPS Monash GPS is a group of policy and community engaged scholars whose research is focused in the field of gender, peace and security.

Drawing upon the agenda set by the United Nation’s Security Council Resolution 1325 (2000) and the resulting Women, Peace and Security program, Monash GPS focuses its research upon the following issues:
• Protecting and advocating for women’s rights during crisis;
• The role of civil society in promoting women’s rights;
• The participation of women in peace processes;
• The participation of women

in post-conflict governance;
• Women’s roles in the prevention of conflict and political violence;
• The protection of women in armed conflict;
• The prevention of sexual and gender-based violence in conflict. Our work deals with these themes on a global level, however we are particularly focused upon the Asia-Pacific region. In addition to research and academic publications, Monash GPS staff engage in undergraduate and graduate teaching and post-graduate supervision, community based activities, research and advocacy-based collaboration with civil society and industry partners, and formal consultation with governments and government agencies.

Last night, we hosted the launch of 'Afghan women at the forefront of climate change'.

Led by Isabelle Zhu-Maguire, Hannah Oates and Caitlin Graham, the magazine is a compilation of stories, essays and images from young, Afghan women. These women are still living in Afghanistan and have written about their experiences of gender-based oppression and climate change. They provide an insight into why the voices of marginalised women are so important if we are to solve the climate crisis.

EVENT ANNOUNCEMENT 🚨 Bargaining with the Taliban: Women, Peace and Security in Afghanistan 🇦🇫 Monash GPS

The Taliban's takeover of Afghanistan on 15 August 2021 undid the significant achievements of the Women, Peace and Security (WPS) agenda in Afghanistan and reinstituted gender apartheid.

What can the international community do to restore women's fundamental rights and freedoms? What is the scope for supporting Afghan women representatives to negotiate directly with the Taliban, and for including Afghan women as equal partners to inform advocacy and policy priorities? What can Australia do to promote an inclusive peace settlement in Afghanistan?

AIIA Victoria invites you to join Dr Jacqui True and Dr Farkhondeh Akbari to discuss the challenges for the women, peace and security agenda in Afghanistan.
