Arts8 – the eight national arts training organisations, including AFTRS – celebrated four days of creativity and collaboration hosted by NAISDA Dance College on the Central Coast of NSW this month.

The theme for this year's annual event was ‘bara biyn ngiyang’ – we all make many. Two participants from each institution are selected to participate, share their craft skills, learn from one another, and work together to devise a wholly new performance piece.

AFTRS was represented by students Maya Hall (Master of Arts Screen) and Kyro Russell (Bachelor of Arts Screen: Production), who showcased their technical and storytelling skills through the inclusion of live video in the final performance. They were supported by AFTRS staff Hamish Gregory and Jane Newton, with Jane playing a key role in the planning, delivery and artistic leadership of the collaboration.

Sessions over the weekend included First Nations and contemporary dance, classical music, circus skills and camera in live performance. The participants were encouraged to draw inspiration from their learnings from each session and incorporate these crafts in their devised work.

We’re thrilled to see Boss Cat make its World Premiere at the Sydney Film Festival – a powerful film with strong ties to the AFTRS community.

Written and directed by Genevieve Clay-Smith and produced by Eleanor Winkler – AFTRS alumni and co-founders of Bus Stop Films – Boss Cat is a testament to inclusive, collaborative filmmaking.

The production also features a strong AFTRS presence behind the scenes, including alum and staff member Natalie Beak (HOD Production Design), whose exceptional work you’ll see on screen, alongside many participants from BSF's Accessible Filmmaking Program at AFTRS.

We’re proud to see our community contributing to a film that champions inclusion and industry-leading practice.

We’re excited to share this trailer from The Cop From Wagga, currently streaming on ABC iview as part of the AFTRS Showcase.

It appears alongside four additional films recently added to the slate — Bőr, Call It Anything, Set Menu and Quiet Night Thought. Created by the Master of Arts Screen classes of 2022/2023, these works are now being enjoyed by audiences across Australia following successful festival runs.

The documentary The Cop From Wagga was awarded silver in the Documentaries category at the ACS QLD & NT Awards last year, and screened at the Antenna Documentary Film Festival and the Heart of Gold International Short Film Festival.

The film revisits 1973, when Terry O’Connell was a junior police officer and, during his rounds, was randomly assaulted by a teenage boy. Instead of throwing the full weight of the law at the offender, Terry set out to revolutionise the way crime and punishment were treated by society and law enforcement.
