Somerset College

Somerset College Located in the heart of the Gold Coast, Somerset College is one of Australia's leading independent Primary and Secondary education providers.

From humble beginnings in 1983, Somerset College has achieved a much esteemed position in education. The success of its students and staff in academic, pastoral, cultural, physical and spiritual domains has flowed from a tangible commitment to excellence and collaboration. One only need visit the beautiful campus, speak with members of our community and, especially, observe the vibrancy and joy of

our students to know that there is something special happening. A triangular approach is facilitated through the focus of staff, parents and students on enhancing student outcomes. The co-educational, multi-age mix of students enables a natural progression from external to self discipline. Our students graduate confident in their own abilities and resilient enough to accept the inevitable challenges that life will provide. The College believes unashamedly in high standards and personal responsibility. Equally our many service programmes provide opportunities for compassion and empathy. After all, “to whom much is given; much is expected”. This initial journey of discovery, for Somerset graduates have only begun their learning, is conducted through a supportive yet challenging set of experiences. Our staff and students walk side by side in this journey and this makes the process all the richer. Mr Craig Bassingthwaighte
Headmaster

The countdown is on for our Year 12 students, who recently came together to celebrate a special milestone, 100 days until graduation.

The morning was filled with great food, music, laughter and time spent with friends as students reflected on their journey so far and looked ahead to the exciting opportunities that await them beyond Somerset. From a delicious breakfast spread and a special 100-day cake to a time capsule filled with memories and messages for the future, the event provided a meaningful opportunity to pause and celebrate how far they have come.

As they enter the final chapter of their Somerset journey, we wish our Year 12 cohort every success as they continue to pursue their goals with confidence, resilience and determination. Here's to making the most of the final 100 days.

National Reconciliation Week is underway at Somerset College, with students and staff coming together to reflect, learn and engage in meaningful conversations around this year's theme, All In.

The week began with our Voices for Reconciliation Assembly, where our community gathered to recognise the importance of reconciliation and the role we all play in creating positive change. During the assembly, our choir performed Beds Are Burning by Midnight Oil, this year's Voices for Reconciliation song, creating a powerful moment of reflection and unity for students and staff.

Students also had the opportunity to hear from Aalyah Shepherd, Gold Coast Titans Netball player and member of the Black Swans Indigenous Netball Team, who shared her experiences and insights during a lunchtime Q&A session.

Throughout the day, students engaged in a range of activities designed to deepen their understanding of First Nations cultures and perspectives. From exploring the Wula Bora, meaning "gift of sharing space", and participating in a National Reconciliation Week scavenger hunt, to contributing to the River of Stones installation and creative workshops, students were encouraged to learn, connect and reflect.

Adding to the experience, Chef Martin created a special National Reconciliation Week menu featuring native ingredients and traditional foods, offering students another meaningful way to engage with and celebrate Indigenous culture.

As we continue National Reconciliation Week, we are reminded that reconciliation is not a spectator sport. By listening, learning and taking action, we continue to foster a community grounded in Shared Humanity, strengthened by a Global Outlook and committed to Personal Success.

History came to life at our Afternoon of Eminence as students transformed into more than 100 notable figures from the past and present.

As part of their inquiry, "Individuals have the power to change the world," students stepped into character and shared the stories, achievements and influence of the people they had researched. The Great Hall was buzzing with energy as families and staff moved from display to display, engaging with students and learning about the individuals who have shaped our world.

Drawing on a range of IB Learner Profile attributes, students demonstrated their knowledge and understanding through thoughtful research, communicated their learning with confidence, and embraced the challenge of presenting in character. Their enthusiasm and commitment were evident in every conversation.

The Afternoon of Eminence was a celebration of curiosity, learning and the power of individual action. By exploring the lives of influential figures from across history and around the world, students gained a broader perspective on the many ways people can contribute to society and create meaningful change, an important reflection of Somerset College's vision of Personal Success, Global Outlook and Shared Humanity.

Music has a unique ability to connect people, cultures and experiences.

For Nishta's Personal Project, she created an original piano composition that blends Indian classical music with Western musical styles. Inspired by her love of music and a desire to explore her cultural heritage, she challenged herself to bring together two distinct musical traditions in a way that was both expressive and meaningful.

Through the creative process, Nishta gained a deeper appreciation for the complexity of Indian music while developing her skills as a composer, musician and creative thinker. By exploring the melodies, structures and traditions that shape different musical styles, she was able to create a piece that reflected both her personal identity and passion for music.

The Personal Project encourages students to pursue their interests, embrace curiosity and create work that is meaningful to them. Nishta’s composition is a wonderful example of how creativity can foster self-discovery, cultural understanding and Personal Success.

Some of our Sustainability Ambassadors recently took part in an EcoMarines Adventure Day, stepping outside the classroom for a hands-on learning experience focused on sustainability, connection and the natural world.

Designed to inspire curiosity, confidence and action, the day brought students together with sustainability experts, EcoMarines partners and the environment around them through memorable learning experiences and activities.

Experiences like this reflect Somerset College’s commitment to developing students with a strong sense of Shared Humanity and Global Outlook, encouraging them to think critically about the world around them and the role they can play in creating a more sustainable future.

Personal Project Spotlight 💡

Combining her passion for mathematics, coding and financial literacy, Inca has developed an automated stock trading software system designed to analyse market trends and support informed trading decisions.

Using real-time market data and self-written code, her software can screen thousands of stocks, identify trading opportunities and automatically execute buy and sell actions based on predefined conditions. Inca has also designed visual indicators to help users better understand market movements and track trading decisions, making the complexity of investing more accessible and easier to navigate.

Beyond the technical side of the project, Inca’s work explores the importance of financial literacy and independence, particularly for young people beginning to learn about investing and financial responsibility. Her project highlights how technology can be used to simplify complex systems, encourage informed decision-making and help users build confidence in an often overwhelming space.

Throughout the process, Inca has strengthened her understanding of coding, problem-solving and data analysis, while also developing resilience, adaptability and long-term project management skills.

Her Personal Project reflects both innovation and curiosity, while demonstrating how learning can be applied to real-world challenges and future opportunities.
