Koalas are full of surprises!
We’ve always known koalas are unique - they’re one of only a few marsupials specially adapted to eat eucalyptus leaves.
But here’s a fun fact you might not know: koalas have fingerprints! Even more incredible, their fingerprints closely resemble human fingerprints.
Koalas are the only known non‑primate animal to have this trait. Nature never ceases to amaze.

Fun fact: Brush turkey chicks hatch fully feathered, able to walk and can fly hours after hatching.

Just an average day at the EcoCentre… hanging out with a cute, cuddly koala (phascolarctoscinereus) and fluffy Tawny frogmouth (podargusstrigoides). Always a joy to connect with our local wildlife and brighten an ordinary Monday.

Spotted by the eagle-eyed Toohey Forest Wildlife team!

High up in the treetops, they captured a Noisy Friarbird (Philemon corniculatus) feeding its very large chick… except that chick isn’t its own!

Meet the Pacific Koel (Eudynamys orientalis), a migratory cuckoo that visits Australia in summer. Koels lay their eggs in the nests of other birds, leaving the unsuspecting hosts to raise their young. The Koel chick grows fast and outcompetes any Friarbird chicks, often leaving them to starve or pushing them out of the nest.
This fascinating (and ruthless) survival strategy is called brood parasitism—a reminder of how complex and competitive nature can be!
