Big news - we’ve got a new name!

As part of structural changes across the University of Newcastle’s College of Engineering, Science and Environment, the School of Information and Physical Sciences is now the School of Computer and Information Sciences.

With this change, the discipline of Physics moves to the new School of Sciences.

The Young Mathematicians Program (YMP) provides an important opportunity for young people who enjoy math to join with like-minded peers. A shoutout to the wonderful team in our Math discipline for organising and delivering this program.

Earlier this year won the People’s Choice Award at the 3 Minute Thesis (3MT) - where PhD students explain years of research in just 3 minutes!
She nailed it with a hilarious talk comparing extracellular vesicles in breath to gossip and social media messages for early viral detection! 😂🫁📱

Last Thursday, the School of Information and Physical Sciences was thrilled to sponsor the WiSTEMM Industry Networking and Panel Night on campus. This event was organised by the WiSTEMM club, made up of wonderful women UON students in Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics and Medicine. Over 40 people attended, included undergraduate and PhD students, plus employees in Hunter industry. was our co-sponsor. This was a polished and exciting event and we hope to see it back next year!

WHAT: Join us for an exciting journey into the world of mathematics with the Young
Mathematician Program (YMP) 2025!

We will show and prove that maths is fun!
Presentations by maths and stats academics, maths relay, workshops, hands on activities, career talks by successful maths alumni in the fields of AI, finance,
insurance and derivative industries plus free pizza! Let's see where the curiosity
in maths can take you in the future!

Teachers are welcome to attend. YMP is
designed for year 8-11 high school students. YMP 2025 conducted in person.

WHEN: Six face to face sessions 4-6 pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays in Term 4
Dates: 4, 6, 11, 13, 18, 20 November 2025
