The University of Melbourne is offering an exciting NEW subject that dives deep into the world of coffee, and it's so much more than just a tasty beverage! Introducing Coffee: Science, Trade & Culture (UNIB20028), a subject that takes you on a fascinating journey through the coffee industry.

🌎 Explore its impact on global economics, environmental sustainability, cultural practices, and technological innovations.
🧑‍🍳 Discover the factors affecting taste and flavour and even try your hand at brewing and cupping.

Whether you're a coffee aficionado, interested in global trade, or just curious about the Melbourne coffee scene, this subject offers something for everyone. It's a chance to brew up some knowledge and gain a deeper appreciation for a drink that connects millions of people worldwide.

🌟Want to inspire young students to explore their interest in STEM?

STEM EDGE is seeking passionate female and gender diverse Masters and PhD students to volunteer as mentors for a new Year 11 Mentoring Program.

Mentors will support a small group of Year 11 students as they explore their interests in STEM, build confidence, and consider future study and career pathways. Alongside the mentoring program, mentors will also contribute to other STEM EDGE activities throughout the year, supporting girls and gender-diverse students across a range of age groups and stages of their STEM journey.

This is an opportunity to share your experiences, develop your mentoring and communication skills, while supporting girls and gender-diverse secondary school students to build confidence and a sense of belonging in STEM.

Applications due Friday 19 June.

Last week, we had a wonderful time at the Faculty of Science SWOT Vac Wellbeing Brunch! 🍛☕

Our students enjoyed hearty meals from Give a Fork, barista-made coffee, fun activities and giveaways with UMSU (University of Melbourne Student Union) and SEDS (Student Equity and Disability Services) provided support and information. Students were also treated to massages and spent time with Milo the therapy dog. 🐕

A big thank you to our amazing student ambassadors for your support on the day - we couldn't have done it without you! 🙌

🥽 Interested in connecting with young people and inspiring them to love and pursue STEM? In2science is a program where university students volunteer their time as a mentor in high school STEM classes or as an online eMentor for 10-week placements.

Over 10 weeks, you will get to know the students and encourage them to relate the topics in class to their lives and interests outside of school. You will show that people who pursue STEM are made up of diverse individuals, not restricted to working in lab and that STEM skills are important in many aspects of our lives!

Volunteering with In2science is a great way to give back to the community while developing your communication skills, enhancing your resume, getting a taste for the classroom and informing our society about the importance and wonders of STEM.

💡Want to inspire the next generation of scientists?

🧪The University of Melbourne Year 10 Work Experience Program provides Year 10 students with a sample of activities that are part of a career in STEM including conducting experiments, attending seminars, collaborating with others on research projects, and presenting their own findings. Year 10 students discover what it is like to be a person working in STEM, meet like-minded friends and STEM role models, and also get a taste of university life.

The program will run Monday 22 to Friday 26 June 2026. We're looking for students who are studying STEM to be volunteers in assisting with the program on Monday and/or Friday.

We had such a fantastic time at yesterday’s Faculty of Science wellbeing brunch! 🥐☕🍓

From delicious croissants, fresh fruit and barista-made coffee to fun activities with UMSU University of Melbourne Student Union and Melbourne University Sport, there was something for everyone. 🎉

We also loved the prize giveaways and seeing everyone get involved!
