Congratulations to Associate Professor Asha Chand, who has been awarded the Kruu Citation for Excellence in Public Teaching for her masterclass, Investigate Impact: The Power of Local Reporting.

Asha’s session brought the power of local journalism to school students across South Asia, the Gulf and Southeast Asia, making specialist knowledge accessible while maintaining its depth and rigour.

Her applied brief has since shaped students’ real-world projects, with several continuing to explore the questions she raised beyond the project itself.

A wonderful recognition of Asha’s expertise, generosity and commitment to inspiring the next generation.

Our Bachelor of Design students visited The Light of the Stars exhibition at the Margaret Whitlam Galleries as part of their Australian Design subject.

The exhibition features Sitara Tanglaw, an artist collective founded by Filipino-Australian painter Marikit Santiago and Punjabi-Australian hip-hop artist L-FRESH The LION.

Marikit spoke with students about her work and life as an artist from Western Sydney, sharing insights into her creative practice and the experiences that shape it.

We’re thrilled to see Bachelor of Design student Maya Goncalves’ work selected as the creative direction for this year’s SEXtember campaign! 🎉

Students were invited to respond to a live creative brief developed specifically for the campaign. Maya completed the brief through the Burrow Design Studio last year, before graduating. Following consultation with external sexual health partners, her concept was chosen for its bold, playful and youth-focused approach.

Her cheeky visual style brings energy and authenticity to important conversations around sexual health, consent, testing and respectful relationships—helping these messages connect meaningfully with young people.

Throughout SEXtember, staff and students can access activities, resources and information about sexual health, local testing services, referral pathways, consent and respectful relationships.

A huge congratulations to Maya, and thank you to Michelle Catanzaro and Matthew Lahoud for creating this valuable opportunity for our students!

Drew Bickford wasn't planning on university. No one in his family had gone, and it took a few years for his love of drawing and sculpting to turn into a decision to enrol in Fine Arts at Western Sydney University. Two degrees and two decades later, he's a two-time Archibald Prize finalist (2024 and 2026), represented by Flinders Street Gallery, and has spent 16 years teaching art and design.
