High school students taking part in the IGNIS Internship Program will all complete a workshop with our School about Bushfire Science!

Bushfire Breakdown will be delivered by two postgraduate students both working on soil, forest, and fire ecology in the South West.

We are looking forward to collaborating with the School of Engineering on this fantastic outreach program.

Under new federal rules that will run for 12 months from March 24, SGARs cannot be manufactured or imported, but existing stock can be sold.

During this time, retailers who continue to sell the product are required to provide consumers with directions at the time of sale to reduce the risk of harm to pets or wildlife.

If you are still purchasing these baits, make sure you ask for the information at the registers.

Retailers selling the existing stock of pesticides that are now banned from production are required to warn consumers of the risks.

🤝 How the Student Hub supports our WIL program

Our Work Integrated Learning (WIL) program is embedded into several of our science courses and is normally completed in the final year of study.

However, it can be confusing for students who study part‑time, take breaks, or receive credit from previous study, as these factors can change when they become eligible to complete WIL.

The Student Hub works with students to create a personalised course planner that clearly shows exactly when they are due to complete their WIL unit.

This ensures students stay on track, understand their timeline, and don’t miss out on applying for their placement. A little planning now means a smoother WIL experience later!

Scientists from our Centre for Marine Ecosystems Research (CMER) celebrated World Oceans Day this week, with Western Australian Marine Science Institution and AMSA WA bringing the community together at Scarborough Beach for a morning of marine science, storytelling and connection in celebration of our shared love for the ocean.

❌ Myth: Industry partners expect our Work Integrated Learning (WIL) students to be experts.

✅ Fact: Our WIL program is about learning, growing and building confidence. It's not about arriving on placement as a fully trained professional in the field.

Our WIL hosts understand that students are still developing their skills. They have the right structures in place to support, mentor, and guide them throughout the experience.

Students are exposed to a variety of tasks, projects, and real‑world challenges designed to help them build capability step by step and gain the confidence they need for their future careers.
