🌟 Stephanie's internship helped her discover a community she never knew existed.

When Stephanie De Luca applied for a McCusker Centre for Citizenship internship, she was looking for an opportunity to gain experience outside the classroom and contribute to the wider community.

Through her internship with the Neurofibromatosis Association of WA, Stephanie helped support the development of a community outreach and education initiative for young people living with neurofibromatosis.

The experience allowed her to develop her research and problem-solving skills while building connections with people and organisations that have continued beyond her internship.

“It was a really unique opportunity to gain workplace experience while contributing to something that could make really meaningful change.”

🌟 Congratulations to Outstanding Intern Award nominee Mia Pham!

During her McCusker Centre for Citizenship internship with Holyoake, UWA Master of Business Analytics Mia supported the analysis of consumer feedback data, helping transform complex survey results into practical insights that informed service planning and improvement.

As an Evaluation Intern, Mia managed and analysed large datasets, developed reports for decision-makers and helped ensure consumer experiences were accurately reflected in organisational planning and reporting.

Her supervisor, Hayley Diver, said:

"Mia exceeded expectations by producing high-quality outputs within agreed timeframes and by proactively clarifying requirements to ensure the final report met organisational needs."

Following our final Student Advisory Committee meeting for 2026, we'd like to extend a huge thank you to John, Gaia and Devansh for their incredible contribution to the McCusker Centre for Citizenship.

Throughout the year, they have represented the Centre at UWA events, helped plan and deliver our intern events, and played a key role in promoting the McCusker Centre for Citizenship.

🌟 Congratulations to Outstanding Intern Award nominee Anshika!

During her McCusker Centre for Citizenship internship with Ear Foundation Australia Australia, Master of Business Analytics student Anshika supported evaluation, reporting and organisational improvement projects that helped the organisation measure and communicate its impact.

As an Evaluation and Reporting Intern, she gained first-hand insight into how data, strategy, communications and leadership work together to support community outcomes.

Her supervisor, Robert White, said:
"Anshika consistently delivered high-quality work, took ownership of tasks, and responded constructively to feedback to improve outcomes."

Reflecting on her experience, Anshika said:
"Behind every number is a responsibility, a story and a community that the work ultimately serves."

Looking for a unit that goes beyond the classroom?

Approaches to Wicked Problems brings together undergraduate and postgraduate students from different disciplines to work with industry partners on complex, real-world challenges.

💡 Work on a real life project
🤝 Collaborate across disciplines
🌏 Develop practical solutions with community impact

Asmaa Abdul Rahman completed the unit with MercyCare earlier this year, helping develop the SisterSafe initiative to support older women experiencing financial vulnerability and scams.

“It strengthened my skills in teamwork, stakeholder engagement, and communication, particularly in translating complex ideas into practical, community-focused solutions.”

A big thank you to UWA Arts Union for hosting the Careers Fair this week!

It was wonderful to see so many Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences students exploring the wide range of opportunities and career pathways available to them while studying at UWA.

Thank you to everyone who stopped by the McCusker Centre for Citizenship table to chat about internships, community impact, professional experience and the many ways students can apply their skills beyond the classroom. We loved hearing about your interests, studies and career aspirations.

Where could an internship take you?

When Chelsea applied for a McCusker Centre for Citizenship internship, she wanted practical experience and the opportunity to contribute to something meaningful.

Through her internship with Perth Inner City Youth Service (PICYS), Chelsea developed marketing and communications skills, learned from experienced professionals, gained insight into how community organisations operate and discovered how storytelling can help build trust and strengthen communities.

"Marketing in this space isn't just about visibility; it's about building trust with the people you're trying to reach."

An internship gives you the opportunity to apply your skills in a real-world setting while contributing to projects that create genuine community impact.

During his McCusker Centre for Citizenship internship with Nakuru Hope, Andy helped strengthen the organisation's digital presence, raise awareness of humanitarian issues, and connect Australian audiences with the experiences of vulnerable communities in Nakuru, Kenya.

Last Thursday, students joined us for Beyond Automation: AI and the Future of Work, the second Student Advisory Committee (SAC) event of Semester 2.

A huge thank you to our panellists, Dr Andreawan Honora, Lisette Kaleveld, Dr David Goyeneche, and Sasank Parimi, for sharing their insights on the future of AI, changing workplaces, ethical considerations, and the skills students can develop to thrive in an evolving workforce.

With 152 students in attendance, the discussion sparked conversations about the opportunities and challenges AI presents across industries, while hearing diverse perspectives from academia, research, and student leadership.
