Following an outstanding second round of performances last Thursday evening, the judges faced the difficult task of selecting just three finalists for the 2026 Irwin Street Collective Instrumental & Vocal Competition from a field of exceptional musicians.

Congratulations to:

• Xuan Chin
• Samuel Thoo
• Vevina Yang

Congratulations also to all performers who took part in the competition. The standard was exceptionally high, and the judges had a very difficult decision to make.

We would also like to thank the collaborative pianists for their outstanding work throughout the competition, as well as everyone who came along to support the performers.

Join us for the final round on Thursday 30 July at 6pm in Callaway Music Auditorium, where the finalists will perform concerto movements with the UWA Chamber Orchestra, led by Shaun Lee-Chen.

Projects like A Child of Our Time offer our students unmatched professional experience and opportunities, performing alongside leading artists and working within a professional production environment. It has been incredibly special to see youth and experience come together in such a powerful and moving work.

A huge thank you to everyone at West Australian Opera for this opportunity and especially to conductor Chris van Tuinen for his work with the ensembles. Thanks also to Chair of Classical Voice, Lisa Harper-Brown for preparing the UWA Symphonic Chorus, alongside accompanists Tommaso Pollio and Sam Thoo.

We are so proud of our students, staff and collaborators who helped bring this remarkable performance to life.
