Congratulations to WA screenwriter and filmmaker Leslie Hornung, who has been selected as one of five participants for the prestigious 2026 UNTAPPED Development Lab! 👏

Australians in Film in partnership with Screen Australia has today announced the five participants of this international initiative, supporting Australia’s most exciting emerging screen writers and directors to build creative partnerships with the US industry and develop a global network of potential collaborators. 🌍

⭐ Leslie is a WA screenwriter and filmmaker based in Perth. He has built experience across writers’ rooms, script departments and production on Australian film and television, with credits including Two Birds (ITV/STAN), Mystery Road: Origin (ABC), The Twelve (BINGE), Invisible Boys (STAN), Scrublands: Silver (STAN), Kid Snow and Whale Shark Jack (STAN). Leslie’s work is driven by distinctly Western Australian stories, q***r perspectives and complicated, funny characters rarely afforded the opportunity to take centre stage.

Final film on our Set Ready production slate is wrapping this week: Future Proof. We filmed at some iconic locations: City Beach, a house in Morley, ABC Studios is East Perth and City Campus studio. Once we wrap tomorrow, and debrief next week, we will all have a much needed and well-deserved mid-semester break before beginning the highly anticipated post-production on all four films in Semester 2. Massive thank you to our mentors, academic, professional and technical staff on behalf of the more than 60 students who've worked on the Set Ready productions.

WASMA students meet the WAAPA composers: As we head toward production on our Set Ready slate of films coming up in May/June, we’re already thinking about post-production. This week our students pitched their projects to the WAAPA composers, outlining plot, characters and emotional journey of their films and the type of music score they are after. This collaboration with WAAPA composers has been a feature of our course for over 10 years and is highly beneficial to our students and emerging composers. We also got to experience one of the new WAAPA working spaces: The Paula Huston Auditorium.
