Marine Science is the study of the ocean, its ecosystems and its life forms as well as the study of coastal environments, oceanic currents and the sea floor. If you are fascinated by Western Australia's amazing marine and coastal environments then Marine Science is the major for you. Marine science includes marine biology and ecology, marine and coastal management, and oceanography. It combines kn

owledge of marine aquatic life with a solid understanding of the physical environment. Through experimental design and research, you will learn to appreciate the complex interactions that occur in marine ecosystems. This major also includes field work in places like Cottesloe Reef and a 5 day field trip to Albany. Western Australia's marine environment is a biodiversity hotspot with up to 80 per cent of fish, invertebrates and other organisms found nowhere else in the world. Teaching methods consist of lectures from leading experts and industry representatives, weekly practical, computer and laboratory classes and tutorials. . UWA is well equipped for teaching and research in marine science and our teaching is supported by the world class research of the Oceans Institute, Centre for Marine Futures, and the Australian Institute of Marine Science (AIMS).

The last of its lineage: Ecology, connectivity and conservation of the relict gastropod Campanile symbolicum

Project overview
How does an evolutionarily unique marine species persist when its populations are isolated, its dispersal capacity is extremely limited, and its environment is changing?
Campanile symbolicum, commonly known as the lighthouse snail, is one of Western Australia's most distinctive marine gastropods. It is the only living representative of the once diverse and widespread family Campanilidae, making it an extraordinary relict of marine evolutionary history. Today, the species is endemic to southwestern Australia, where it occurs in patchily distributed populations in shallow coastal habitats.
Despite its evolutionary and ecological significance, surprisingly little is known about its biology, population ecology or vulnerability to environmental change.
Research at UWA over recent years has begun to change this. Our work has investigated population connectivity, growth and seasonal spatial ecology and, importantly, has recently confirmed that C. symbolicum has direct development.
These findings raise important ecological and conservation questions. How connected are populations along the Western Australian coastline? How far can individuals disperse? What maintains isolated populations? Are populations locally adapted? Where are the species' strongholds, and where has it disappeared? How will geographically isolated populations respond to warming oceans, coastal development and habitat change?

Research objectives
The project can be developed around the interests and expertise of the successful candidate, with potential research spanning interconnected themes: ecology and population dynamics, reproductive and life-history ecology, biogeography and connectivity, and conservation under environmental change.
Ecological, demographic and spatial data generated through the PhD will contribute directly to assessing the conservation status of C. symbolicum and addressing the information currently preventing a robust IUCN Red List assessment.

Experience in field ecology, quantitative analysis, GIS, genetics or marine invertebrate research would be advantageous but is not essential.
Applicants may have backgrounds in:
Marine biology, Ecology, Zoology, Conservation biology, Evolutionary biology, Environmental science, Population genetics/genomics, Spatial ecology, or other related disciplines.
The project will involve marine fieldwork, so applicants should be comfortable working in and around the marine environment. SCUBA qualifications would be advantageous, although the specific field methods will depend on the direction taken by the successful candidate.
Highly motivated candidates with excellent academic records and strong communication skills are encouraged to apply.

Both domestic and international applicants are encouraged to apply.
Scholarships are awarded competitively and applicants should normally have First Class Honours (or equivalent) or a Master's degree with a substantial research component.

Understanding and Restoring the World's Largest Seagrass Ecosystem

Project overview
Healthy seagrass meadows are among the world's most important marine ecosystems, supporting fisheries, protecting coastlines, storing vast amounts of blue carbon, and providing habitat for hundreds of marine species. Yet these ecosystems are declining globally under increasing pressure from climate change.
This PhD project focuses on one of the world's most iconic marine environments—Shark Bay (Gathaagudu), Western Australia, a UNESCO World Heritage Area containing the largest seagrass meadow on Earth. Following an unprecedented marine heatwave in 2011, approximately one-third of Shark Bay's seagrass was lost, including around 85% of the dominant wireweed (Amphibolis antarctica) meadows. Fourteen years later, recovery remains surprisingly limited despite the ecological importance of these habitats.
This project will investigate the ecological processes limiting natural recovery and develop science-based strategies to accelerate recovery of this globally significant ecosystem.

What you will do
The successful PhD candidate will have opportunities to:
• Conduct fieldwork in the spectacular Shark Bay World Heritage Area
• Monitor flowering, seedling recruitment and juvenile establishment
• Measure environmental drivers of reproduction
• Apply GIS and spatial modelling to identify recruitment hotspots and restoration priorities
• Analyse physiological and/or molecular indicators of resilience
• Collaborate with Traditional Owners, government agencies and local stakeholders
• Publish research in leading international journals
• Present findings at national and international conferences
The project will work in collaboration with the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions (DBCA), Malgana Traditional Owners, industry partners and UWA researchers.
Candidate profile
We welcome applicants with backgrounds in:

Experience in one or more of the following is desirable but not essential:
