UWA Graduate School of Education The page for the Graduate School of Education at The University of Western Australia (UWA).

Education has been a keystone at The University of Western Australia (UWA) for more than 90 years. We offer internationally recognised opportunities in teacher preparation and educational research that are innovative and challenging. We’re a research-intensive university committed to exploring the unknown, challenging convention and making things happen. The UWA Graduate School of Education is highly regarded for the quality of teaching and experiences it offers to students. Its graduates are in high demand by local and international employers. Through teachings and practical placements in schools, graduates experience first-hand what it’s like to teach a classroom of students and complete their studies fully prepared for this environment. We also offer many professional and research courses that have been designed to help you further your knowledge and skills in education. Our students conduct research in areas such as leadership, policy and governance in education; student learning processes and wellbeing; and the measurement of education outcomes. This research enables us to further our understanding of education and its impact on the community.

Professor Tanya Fitzgerald, from UWA’s Graduate School of Education, has been awarded a Distinguished Fellowship of the British Educational Leadership Management and Administration Society (BELMAS). Founded in 1971, the Society is a Learned Society dedicated to advancing educational leadership and the BELMAS Distinguished Service Award is their highest accolade. Distinguished Fellows are individuals who, throughout their careers, have made significant contributions to the field of educational leadership, management and administration. These individuals have ‘moved knowledge forwards’ within the Society and the wider community. Professor Fitzgerald is the first international scholar to receive this award that recognises her significant contributions as a leading interdisciplinary scholar in the field.

In the final week of July, the Graduate School of Education (GSE) welcomed colleagues from Hong Kong for another successful professional learning course on best practices in school assessment in our current educational context.
Participants were Ms LUN Nga-man, Ms PANG Kit-han Fiona, Ms WONG Wing-sze, and Ms YIP Wai-ting Vashti, all of whom are highly respected leaders in Hong Kong schools.
The course was developed and facilitated by Professor Tanya Fitzgerald, Professor Elaine Chapman, Dr Jennifer Shand, Professor Grace Oakley, Professor Mark Pegrum, Mr Chris DeHaer, Ms Jess Nailer, and Dr Wei Zhang, with expert support provided by Ms Georgia Wachmer.
The week provided a valuable opportunity for the participants and UWA teaching staff to share knowledge, experiences, and perspectives on contemporary approaches to school assessment. The course was a resounding success, with a great deal learned on both sides through the discussions, activities, and exchange of ideas.
We look forward to continuing and strengthening our engagement with the Hong Kong Education Bureau in the future.
