UWA Law School is the oldest law school in Western Australia and the fifth-oldest in Australia. Founded in 1927 in close partnership with local practitioners and judges who assisted with teaching, the UWA Law School continues to ensure students have the opportunity to engage with experts and leaders in all areas of law. We are committed to upholding the rule of law, and the promotion of the highest standards of ethical conduct, professional responsibility, and community service. We’re a research-intensive university committed to exploring the unknown, challenging convention and making things happen. With a focus on legal professionalism, through our taught courses we aim to produce students who are both civically and globally responsible and work-ready. Most recently, in 2013, the Bachelor of Laws was replaced with the Juris Doctor to better prepare our graduates for contemporary legal practice.

The UWA Law Review is delighted to announce the release of its general issue for 2026, edited by Dr Jessica Kerr. The issue features a wide range of timely and original contributions from legal scholars across and beyond Australia, and new original artwork by one of the Law School's own postgraduate students. The issue covers a wide range of legal topics from the duty of care in negligence to constitutional issues for non-citizens, from youth justice to trade secrets protection, and much more.

As Australia's oldest continuously published university law journal, the Review is committed to supporting excellent open-access research (and researchers) and to upholding the highest standards of integrity in publication. UWA Law School congratulates Dr Nyssa Bull, who graduated recently with her PhD. Dr Bull’s thesis examined how creators use social media to call out perceived instances of intellectual property design appropriation, exploring the role of social media as an informal mechanism for accountability and access to justice in the creative industries.

Dr Bull was supervised by Professor Jani McCutcheon, Emerita Professor Robyn Carroll and Pro-Vice Chancellor Academic Advancement & Diversity Fiona McGaughey.

The Law School congratulates Judge Brenda McGivern on her recent appointment to the judiciary at the District Court of Western Australia, where she was previously the Principal Registrar. Judge McGivern is an Adjunct Associate Professor at the Law School and was previously a Deputy Dean. She also held other significant roles at UWA's former Faculty of Arts, Business, Law and Education. We warmly congratulate Judge McGivern on this significant achievement and wish her every success in her judicial career.

Recently, students in the LAWS2223 Criminal Justice Systems unit had the opportunity to hear from Nikki Conley, State Prosecutor, and Daniel Harrop, Senior State Prosecutor, from the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions for Western Australia. Nikki and Daniel drew on their professional expertise to give students a valuable insight into the role and responsibilities of the ODPP and what their day-to-day work actually looks like.

Thank you both, Nikki and Daniel, for such a fantastic opportunity – our students benefit greatly from hearing directly from practitioners working in the criminal justice system.

The Law School looks forward to welcoming you tomorrow night to the French Dialogues, when the Honourable Robert French AC, Kate Chaney MP, Independent Member for Curtin and the Law School's Deputy Head of School (Community and Engagement) Marilyn Bromberg ("M") will discuss an important and timely topic: the minimum age to use social media and the law. Named in honour of the Honourable Robert French AC, former Chief Justice of the High Court of Australia, former UWA Chancellor and current UWA Adjunct Professor, the French Dialogues are a biennial event that continues his legacy of thoughtful discussion on issues shaping our society.

Lawyers attending can claim 1 CPD point (Substantive Law) by entering their practitioner number when registering.

Recently, the UWA Law School held its annual Advanced Legal Research Works in Progress Conference. It involved JD students enrolled in the Advanced Legal Research unit explaining their work on their research projects to date. The students' presentations were excellent.

The UWA Law Review was pleased to host Behind the Pages: A Discussion of the Katy Perry v Katie Perry Decision, featuring a preview of forthcoming commentary in its 2026 general issue.

The discussion brought together an outstanding panel comprising the Hon Justice Darren Jackson of the Federal Court of Australia, Amy Rumble of Bennett Law, and Dr Nyssa Bull of The University of Western Australia.

The panel also considered the recent High Court decision in Taylor v Killer Queen LLC [2026] HCA 5, as well as the broader legal issues explored in Dr Bull’s forthcoming commentary. The event provided an opportunity for students, academics and practitioners to engage with the case and the ideas informing the latest issue of the UWA Law Review.

The UWA Law Review thanks Justice Jackson, Amy Rumble and Dr Bull for their insightful contributions, and all those who attended the event and contributed to the discussion.
