The Communication Design From Around The World exhibition opens on Monday 31 August!

Duration: Monday 31 August – Friday 11 September
Location: Building 418 exhibition space, Koorliny Way, Bentley
Opening Times: Monday-Friday, 9:00 AM-4:00 PM

Communication design is never culturally neutral. It is shaped by visual languages, histories and ways of seeing. Designers use these to inform their work and the decisions they make regarding the use of images, typefaces, symbols and composition.
Bringing together student work from 11 countries, this exhibition provides an opportunity for visitors to deepen their understanding of how meaning is made and see how different cultural perspectives and design practices can shape communication design.

Erica has achieved an incredible result, taking out first place in Western Australia at the Design Institute of Australia (DIA) Student Awards for Communication Design in the “CONVEY — Higher Education” category.

This outstanding recognition celebrates Erica’s creativity, skill and dedication to communication design, and is a fantastic achievement so early in her design career.

We are incredibly proud to see a Curtin Graphic Design graduate recognised at a state level and can’t wait to see where Erica’s talent takes her next.

Associate Professor Claudia Westermann, PhD (School of Design and the Built Environment), held a leading role throughout the American Society for Cybernetics (ASC) 2026 Conference, *Conversational Confluences*, in Ouro Preto, Brazil. She chaired the conference's opening session, *Confluences of Voices*, which brought together former ASC presidents in a conversation reflecting on six decades of cybernetic thinking.

Across the week, she also co-chaired one of the conference's thematic tracks, contributed to a session bringing practitioners of traditional and Indigenous knowledges into conversation with cyberneticians, ran a workshop with Curtin's Ecologies of Imagination Micro Lab, and delivered the conference's closing remarks.

Founded in 1964, the American Society for Cybernetics is a long-standing international scholarly society. Claudia was elected ASC President in June 2026 and will assume the role in 2027, placing a Curtin researcher at the head of the organisation. The conference addressed urgent ecological, political, and technological questions, providing an international platform to showcase the School of Design and the Built Environment's research and position Curtin within these important global conversations. Curtin supported Claudia's travel on the basis of this invitation.

AIPM Hiring the Next Generation: Built Environment Industry Panel

Our Construction Management and Project Management students recently gained valuable industry insights during a panel discussion exploring the qualities employers value most in early-career professionals within the built environment.

The discussion highlighted that success extends beyond technical skills, with communication, adaptability, initiative, professionalism, collaboration, and a willingness to learn all playing a vital role in building a rewarding career. Students also received practical advice on transitioning from university into industry, building professional networks, and embracing new opportunities with confidence.

A sincere thank you to Anna Broughton (Bridge42), Mayson Willoughby (Talent), and Qindong Li (Main Roads Western Australia) for generously sharing your career journeys, experiences, and practical advice. Your insights gave our students a valuable understanding of employer expectations and the exciting opportunities available across the construction and project management industries.

These industry partnerships play an important role in preparing our students for the workforce, helping them build meaningful connections and develop the skills needed for long-term success.

Paving the Way: Women's Journeys in Construction

Curtin University's School of Design and the Built Environment Construction Management team, in partnership with the National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC) WA, hosted Paving the Way: Women's Journeys in Construction. Students heard from inspiring women across industry, government, and academia who shared their career journeys, challenges overcome, and lessons learned, followed by a lively roundtable discussion.

From being told their strengths were weaknesses, to navigating male dominated teams, our speakers shared candid, courageous stories of resilience and reminded us that the hardest paths often lead to the most meaningful ones.

This was a wonderful afternoon celebrating and empowering the next generation of women in construction.

Creative Practice Research Showcase 2026 presents interdisciplinary explorations of the object as a catalyst for sensory engagement, emotional connection, and critical reflection. Moving beyond conventional disciplinary boundaries, the exhibition encourages creative practice that reimagines objects as active participants in shaping human experience and the built environment.

Through innovative making, collaboration, and experimentation, exhibited objects provoke interaction, embody cultural meaning, and challenge established perspectives.

Showcasing the breadth of research and creative practice across the School of Design and the Built Environment, the exhibition celebrates original work that expands our understanding of material culture through interdisciplinary inquiry. The exhibited work underwent a blind review process by panels of national and international reviewers.

The Exhibition will be open from 10 August to 19 August, Mon - Friday, 9am - 4pm, in B418, Level 1, Exhibition Space & Gallery!

Curtin alumna Georgina Willis is helping shape more inclusive communities through award-winning architecture while inspiring others with her remarkable personal resilience.

As Director of Bernard Seeber Architects, Georgina leads the delivery of civic and community projects that place accessibility, inclusion and long-term community benefit at the forefront of design.

Most recently, Georgina led the South Beach Public Facilities project for the City of Fremantle, which received the Brian Kidd Enabling Architecture Prize and the Small Project Architecture Award at the 2026 WA Architecture Awards. The project was recognised for its commitment to universal accessibility, inclusion and community wellbeing, demonstrating how thoughtful design can create meaningful public places for people of all abilities.

A Curtin University graduate with more than 17 years of professional experience, Georgina has also contributed to the profession through guest lecturing, mentoring architecture students, and serving as a juror for the Australian Institute of Architects WA Architecture Awards.

Beyond her professional achievements, Georgina has demonstrated remarkable strength and resilience in overcoming previous physical health hurdles. In 2024, she achieved a long-held goal by completing the demanding Port to Pub solo swim, crossing the Rottnest Channel in 6 hours and 58 minutes. Her achievement reflects the determination, perseverance and positive outlook that have shaped both her personal journey and professional career.

Through both her professional and personal achievements, Georgina continues to make a positive contribution to her community while inspiring others through leadership, determination and a commitment to creating inclusive places for everyone.

✨️ Driving design-led innovation through collaboration with industry: Associate Professor Qassim Saad

Design Matters: Craft and Digital Integration (DMCDI) initiative brings together students from the Faculty of Creative Design and Digital Business with industry partners to co-design innovative products, explore sustainable business models, and develop digitally enabled marketing strategies.

By connecting creativity with real-world industry challenges, DMCDI provides students with valuable interdisciplinary professional experience while fostering meaningful partnerships that support innovation across the local craft sector.

These photos capture the conclusion of the workshop delivered as part of my engagement as an Adjunct Professor in the Faculty of Creative Design and Digital Business at Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS), Surabaya, Indonesia. Working with such enthusiastic students and colleagues highlighted the value of international collaboration, knowledge sharing, and design-led innovation in preparing the next generation of creative professionals.

Together, we're shaping the future of design through collaboration, sustainability, and creative practices.
