This unit builds the skills and knowledge required to identify domestic and family violence, respond appropriately, and ensure the safety and wellbeing of clients. It is designed for workers who may encounter family violence in their roles but are not specialist family violence practitioners.

Eva Burrows College represented well at Thought Matters Conference in Auckland on the weekend. Major Sandy MacDonald presented on “Give us this day our daily bread,” using child theology to develop a theology of dependence. Sandy along with Auxiliary Lieutenant Matt Cairns is a member of the South Pacific Theological Forum who organise this annual conference. Academic Dean Major Dr Catherine Spiller was also present and we were able to catch up in person with one of our sessional faculty, Dr Stephen Garner, who is based in New Zealand.
“Do not be anxious about anything” (Philippians 4:6) was the theme of Thought Matters 2026 and papers were presented from a variety of cultural perspectives and addressed the topic from academic and lived experience perspectives. It was exciting to be part of the theological conversations on this important topic.
The journal from Thought Matters 2025 (Theologies of work, play, and rest) is now available and includes chapters by EBC Higher Ed faculty Catherine, Matt and Sandy. Copies can be borrowed from Eva Burrows College library or individual chapters can be scanned electronically.

Higher education student Jason Poutawa shares from his experience studying in the Worship and Preaching: Essentials unit.

“Worship and Preaching Essentials reinforced something significant for me—that preparing to lead worship involves more than preparing the songs and other material; it also means intentionally preparing myself. However, the unit highlighted how much more I had to discover in that space. It helped shift my emphasis from simply leading worship myself to intentionally leading and releasing our team, so that together we could lead the congregation more effectively. A number of worship leaders have since commented that our worship has become more Spirit-led and marked by greater humility. I believe this has come as I’m learning to let go, allow the Holy Spirit to lead me and embrace space for him to use our team to lead the congregation into a deeper place of worship.”
