It's time for our annual 'We'll finish this elephant skeleton this summer' post! So here it goes...

We'll finish this elephant skeleton this summer!

At least she has (almost) four legs now. A lot of tweaking left to do, but surely we're on the home stretch, right?

People often ask us how long it takes to build a skeleton. The answer is, it would take a lot less time if this didn't happen!

Here's some old footage showing the...errrr...effortless transfer of the Elephant skeleton to the mounting board 🤦‍♂️

For the next few months we've relocated to a more spacious room (Anatomy lab) with a view (that tiny window in the top right).
With teaching commitments winding down for the year, we're back onto our elephant skeleton and aiming to have her on display in early 2022!

This afternoons view...

The elephant is in for it's 10,000 km service and oil change 😂

Nah, just mounting the skull to the display board. Hopefully it holds 😬

Radelaidians! What did you get up to during the lockdown?

We took the opportunity to reconstruct a capybara skull damaged during post mortem examination. The largest rodent in the world is not exactly common in Adelaide, so it was worth the effort 🦛

That's a hippo emoji...but it kind of looks like a capybara if you squint

Even though you can't tell, we made some progress last week! The skull, vertebrae and pelvis are all secured to the frame now. Next step, reposition the mandible and secure the ribs...

The wombat and koala. Each other's closest living relative, separated by more than 30 million years of evolution. Together at last

It's a touching moment

We've been moving some things around today and finally put this amazing skull on display. Anyone want to guess what it is? There's no scale...because that would make it too easy 😉

With the colder weather setting in, our dermestid beetles have become quite slumbersome. So, we've some modifications to their enclosure this week.
If we could speak to insects, we're sure the beetles would tell us they love their new thermostat controlled ceramic heat lamp

It's taken a long time to collect and prepare enough skulls to fill this display, but we finally have a comparative collection of dog breed skulls!

The last few weeks we've been in intensive model production mode! More specifically, skin pads and uteri simulants for students to practice spaying.

Designed in consultation with Small Animal Surgeon, Dr Olaf Schaaf, the skin and uteri will allow students to practice clinical skills before using them in a real clinical setting!

That's 12 done. Just another...24 of each to go 🤦‍♂️ Luckily we called in additional support to get through it all. So, thank you to Tash Collins for producing the skin pads!

More photos in the comments!
