On the 27th of November, we had our end of year exhibition for the School of Engineering Design and Built Environment, where students from all disciplines were able to display their work, network and farewell another year of study.

Here we have a few of our students and their work on the night. How wonderful to share in them being able to show their projects they poured their hearts and souls into and celebrate their achievements over the year.

Thank you to everyone student that contributed and we are so proud of how innovative and thought provoking your works were!

Science and Maths Expo 2025

Our recent Science and Maths Expo was a great
success, with 160 Year 8, 9 and 10 students taking part
in a wide range of STEM activities. Students enjoyed
building and battling Battlebots, exploring the night sky
in the planetarium, meeting animals with Sydney Zoo,
and engaging with hands-on sessions from Fizzics
Education, the One Giant Leap Foundation and the
Australian Museum. They also took part in interactive
science and maths challenges, Mabble (maths
scrabble) competitions, 3D printing, and slime-making,
thanks to colleagues in TRTS, School of CDMS,
School of EDBE & School of Science.

A sincere thank you to our staff, volunteers, and
external partners for their support in making the day
possible. Their efforts created an engaging and
memorable experience that showcased the excitement
of science and maths

Will drones revolutionise bridge inspection?
There are now over 900,000 kilometres of roads and over 50,000 bridges in Australia. Millions of commuters rely on the transportation network. The reliability and safety of these infrastructure elements are crucial to the Australian economy.
Utilising drones may improve bridge safety and minimise risk to inspectors with high levels of accuracy.

Moon Day 2025 at Western Sydney University, Australia

The School of Engineering, Design and Built Environment and the School of Law hosted a special event for International Moon Day on the 30th of July at Parramatta Engineering Innovation Hub in Sydney. International Moon Day was declared on the 9th of December 2021 by the UNGA on the recommendation of the Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space. This day is celebrated on the 20th of July to honour the anniversary of the first landing on the Moon.

International Moon Day at Western Sydney University included a screening of a short film, Moonrise 2021, and a keynote from Emeritus Professor Steven Freeland entitled: Star Laws: A New Hope for Space Governance.

The Acknowledgement of Country and introduction to Moon Day and the Speaker was given by Distinguished Professor Brian Falzon, the Executive Dean for the Faculty of Engineering, Computing and Science, who also pointed out the importance of space to First Nations people.

Emeritus Professor Steven Freeland’s speech centred on addressing seven questions: Why is space critical for humanity? What Voices are Relevant for the Governance of Space? Why has space ‘worked’ (thus far)? Where do these Rules come from? What are the ‘Big Issues’ for Global Space Governance? Exploiting Space Resources – Really?, and Why must we ensure a Sustainable Future for our Space activities? His keynote showed the significance of space to mankind.

Professor Freeland was thanked by Professor Catherine Renshaw, the Dean of the School of Law, who noted the excellent work that Professor Freeland is doing as Chair of the United Nations COPUOS Working Group on Legal Aspects of Space Resource Activities.

Among the audience was Michael Kirby, jurist and academic who is a former Justice of the High Court of Australia, Professor Yang Xiang, Interim Dean for the School of Engineering Design and Built Environment, Professor Juan Salazar, Interim Director for the Institute for Culture and Society and Serdar Baycan, Founder of Solar Space Technologies and a member of the Board of Advisors for International Moon Day.
