The University of Queensland established The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies (ATSIS) Unit in 1985 as a commitment to the learning, discovery and engagement of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. The ATSIS Unit strongly supports the celebration of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and recognises the enormous contributions that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and perspectives bring to UQ’s Learning, Discovery and Engagement activities.

Last week, UQ celebrated the largest mid-year Sashing Ceremony in UQ's history, with 16 graduands alongside many family members, friends, Elders, community, staff and supporters.

As Mununjali, Kombumerri and Rotuman descendant and Bachelor of Business Management / Arts, Callagan Williams said, "Not only does it take a village to raise a child, but it takes a village to live a life. I would not be here today without my village... But with my village (or truthfully, perhaps it should be 'my metropolis'), I am here."

This week, The University of Queensland proudly marked the 50th anniversary of NAIDOC Week with a powerful keynote address from Dr (Aunty) Pat Anderson AO.

Her message was both inspiring and thought-provoking, reminding us that meaningful progress is built through collaboration, community and shared purpose.

“The past 50 years are deadly, not because of one person or one action or one change of law or policy, they’re deadly because we spent 50 years working together to create our future. And we’re still fighting and shaping a future.”
