Meriden Indigenous Bursary

Meriden Indigenous Bursary The MIB aims to facilitate the education of Indigenous girls from the Ti Tree community (NT) at Meriden Senior School, through raising funds and awareness.

MERIDEN INDIGENOUS BURSARY

Currently, Meriden is privileged to have five Ti Tree girls undertaking study at Meriden in Years 7, 8 and 12. The Meriden Indigenous Bursary is on an exciting, upward trajectory. Some highlights from 2014 include:

• The creation of a new Meriden Indigenous Bursary Logo (Term 1). The Committee, in conjunction with the Senior Prefects, invited Senior School students t

o submit designs for a new Bursary logo and were proud to award the winning design to Sophie Laundy and Jessica Bader (Year 9).

• Distribution of a targeted ‘Mail Out’ campaign to approximately 2600 members of the Meriden ‘Old Girls’ network, with the aim of raising awareness of the Bursary within the wider school community and inviting recipients to contribute towards the girls’ educational experience at Meriden. On 31 October 2013, the Committee hosted a very successful interactive Forum, featuring a keynote address by renowned Indigenous leader Mr NOEL PEARSON, and interactive Panel discussion with other educational experts on the topic of ‘Remote Indigenous Education’. Following the success of this event, the Committee held a second forum on 4th September 2014 on the topic of: ‘Getting to Year 12 - Support for Indigenous students throughout High School.’ The evening featured addresses by The Hon Bess Price, Minister for Women in the Northern Territory Legislative Assembly and Ms Karla Grant, Presenter of popular SBS series ‘Living Black’. The evening was attended by representatives from the local community, students, teachers and politicians and Indigenous elders to discuss the importance of remote Indigenous education for girls and to support the program at Meriden. If you are interested in being part of the Committee, we are always looking for new and enthusiastic members and skills. Please contact the Bursary via email or Facebook for more information or to donate. Thank you to the Meriden community for their continued support. Indigenous education is such an important initiative for Meriden to be investing in and foundational to closing the gap in other areas of Indigenous inequality that exist in Australia.

Good to see the Federal Government investing in Indigenous education! It once again highlights what an important and transformative initiative the Meriden Indigenous Bursary is for the school and community.

"We want the girls to finish year 12 because that is the greatest success indicator ... for every girl that finishes year 12, the empowerment and the opportunities beyond that are enormous; it is a real change catalyst."

Meriden has been ranked 16th in the overall NSW High School rankings based on this year's HSC results. This is simply outstanding and a testament to the quality of teaching Meriden, the dedication of staff and school leadership, and the work ethic of the girls. Well done to Anthea and the 2015 Year 12 cohort on a wonderful result. We are so proud of you!

23 years after his historic 'Redfern Address', Paul Keating has again delivered a profound message about the importance of Aboriginal culture to the Australian identity and nation. Well worth a read.

"Our opportunity is to rejoice in their identity, and without attempting to appropriate or diminish it, fuse it with our own, making the whole richer."

Twenty-three years after he confronted Australians with the truth of Indigenous dispossession, Paul Keating has delivered another profound message on reconciliation.
