Scientia Professor and Anthony Mason Professor Rosalind Dixon joined the lineup at Sydney Writers’ Festival last week for conversations on democracy, constitutional change and Australia’s political future, presented in collaboration with the UNSW Resilient Democracy Lab.

In The Future of Democracy: Fighting Authoritarianism, Rosalind joined Philosophy Professor A.C. Grayling and host Nick Bryant to examine the growing fragility of democratic foundations, civil liberties and public trust.

Rosalind also appeared alongside co-author of the The People’s Guide to the Australian Constitution, William Partlett, on a panel - How Australia Works, The ins and outs of what makes a nation. Alongside Annabel Crabb and host Rosemarie Milsom, they discussed one of the oldest constitutions in the world and how continues to shape Australian democracy.

⭐️ Meet Mohammad Jamalul Giducos

Growing up in a conflict-affected province in the Philippines, Mohammad’s work is deeply rooted in his own lived experience of the challenges to healthcare and resources faced by remote communities.

Now serving as a government official leading the legal operations of the Philippines’ amnesty program for former rebels, he oversees legal and policy processes to support reintegration into civilian life.

An Australia Awards Scholar, Mohammad travelled to Australia and completed his Master of Laws at UNSW Law & Justice in 2024. Now he's going on to study International Crimes, Justice and Human Rights at the Geneva Academy of International Humanitarian Law and Human Rights in Geneva, Switzerland.

UNSW Law & Justice student Nicolette Nair has returned from her studies at the Center for Transnational Legal Studies (CTLS) in partnership with Georgetown Law, and her experience was nothing short of transformative.

“For me, the most valuable part of CTLS was the people. I made lifelong friends from all over the world and created memories I’ll always carry with me.”

Based in London, Nicolette embraced every opportunity, travelling across Europe to places like Budapest, Malta, Barcelona, Paris, Edinburgh and Portugal. Each destination brought something new, while living in London itself meant there was always something to explore.

Her experience was as much about personal growth as it was academic. From her first solo trip to Edinburgh to surfing in Lagos, Nicolette stepped outside her comfort zone and built confidence along the way. “Learning about global issues can feel daunting, but it was incredibly valuable and really broadened my perspective.”

Nicolette encourages future students to dive in fully, both socially and academically, and to make the most of every opportunity. “It helped me grow personally, build lasting friendships, and create memories that will stay with me for life.”

🛠️ Why should skills and talent go to waste when small business owners are desperate to find workers?

A little-known pilot program connecting skilled refugees with regional employers is a success, say Dr Claire Higgins and Dr Louise Olliff, but it's due to end next month.

Their research, published this week by the UNSW Kaldor Centre for International Refugee Law, explains why this humanitarian solution to a chronic skills shortage deserves a permanent place in Australia.

We recently delivered a program in partnership with King's College London, Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais - UFMG and the Conselho Nacional de Justiça (CNJ) that helps strengthen judicial legitimacy and public confidence in Brazil's legal institutions.

In response to increasingly complex judicial decision-making, the Women Judges Program supports Brazil's underrepresented leaders and deepens institutional recognition of how law operates within a diverse society. Learn more here ➡️ https://bit.ly/4eCevXR
