“Eggcorns” – have you heard of them? 🥚🌽

They’re words or phrases that have been misheard or misremembered in a way that still sounds perfectly plausible – like saying “all intensive purposes” instead of “all intents and purposes”, or “a mute point” instead of “a moot point.”

It's a common phenomenon that can happen even to native English speakers.

MARCS researcher, Professor Mark Antoniou, joined RNZ to chat about the fascinating world of eggcorns and the clever ways our brains make sense of language.
