“Finishing the Hat” (A Sondhiem Showcase)

Stephen Sondhiem is widely regarded as one, if not the greatest, Musical Theatre composer of all time. In a nearly 70-year career, he wrote the music and/or lyrics to twenty full length musicals including “Sunday in the Park With George”, “Company”, “Into the Woods”, and “Sweeney Todd.”

This material is challenging. It demands an advanced understanding of language, a high level of musicianship, and the willingness to explore and understand some of life’s most fundamental experiences. Love, loss, frustration, hate are all favourite topics of Sondheim, and all feature in this amazing production, “Finishing the Hat.”

A glimpse behind the scenes of Tom Hodgson's creative process as he developed a dynamic new dance work inspired by the legendary choreographers of American musical theatre, with a special tribute to the one and only Bob Fosse.

"For this piece, I wanted to celebrate the infectious energy and theatrical spirit of classic American musical theatre. With a respectful nod to the groundbreaking work of Bob Fosse, the choreography is driven by the vibrant rhythms of swing, ragtime and jazz, embracing the wit, sophistication and exuberance that define these timeless musical styles.

My aim was to create a work that is bold, dynamic and full of joy—one that challenges the dancers technically while inviting them to revel in the sheer excitement of live performance and the enduring magic of musical theatre."

‘Allure’ is a contemporary dance work inspired by the Greek mythological story of Sirens. The work will portray the story of how sirens used their harmonising singing voices to seduce and ultimately kill and drown passing sailors. Through temptation, manipulation and empowerment, we show how the sailors become captivated and ultimately consumed by the sirens’ influence.

‘Do You Remember Us? Will You Remember Us?’ is a dance work dedicated to Palestinian children. It threads through exploring an occupation’s presence in one‘s pathways, the loss of children in genocide, and the aftermath for families and communities.

“The work is based on true events and has been created in solidarity with Palestine. For me, this has been a long time coming. Palestine lives in my mind and soul continuously. I see the work both as deeply purposeful and a struggle, because I understand I will never make it justice. I still have made the choice and acknowledge the responsibilities we carry as artists and bystanders. My gratitude for my dancers is endless. Thank you for committing. Thank you for giving me your time, focus and care. I can only hope it stuck with you. My wish for this work is to leave a forever impact and break our fourth wall. Can it make you look at yourself and ask what your role is to play in this? It matters and it will be remembered.”

‘While They Marched’ is a contemporary dance work inspired by the stories of many women, including my Great Great Aunt, Phyillis Parlato, who lost her husband in World War I. It captures the quiet strength of women waiting for their loved ones to return from war. Through moments of farewell, the volunteer work of knitting socks for soldiers, supporting one another through uncertainty, and receiving the telegrams that would forever alter their lives, the work reveals the emotional reality of those left behind. While They Marched honours the courage of these women, celebrating not only their ability to endure unimaginable loss but also the compassion and resilience they found in lifting one another through times of grief.

“Creating ‘While They Marched’ has been an incredibly meaningful journey. Working alongside my amazing cast has encouraged me to delve deeper into our Australian past. The work aspires to shine a light on the often-overlooked experiences of the women who waited at home. I hope it leaves audiences with a greater appreciation for their resilience, sacrifice, and unwavering strength.”
