Imagine being told the foods that keep most of us healthy are now off the menu. For many of the 50,000 Australians living with a stoma, that’s an everyday reality.

Assoc. Professor Teresa Mitchell-Paterson has spent 20 years supporting people with stomas, and her PhD asks what low-fibre diets really mean for those with high-output stomas, and for their quality of life. Through Australia’s first national study of nutritional gaps in stoma care, she surveyed 101 people and interviewed 12, aged 28 to 88.

Their hidden stories could reshape how we think about nutrition, dignity, and care after bowel surgery.
