Our very own, Laurie Berg, Associate Professor in the Faculty of Law at UTS and Co-Executive Director of the Migrant Justice Institute, contributed to the release of a major new report examining migrant worker exploitation in Australia.

Released on 7 May, the report draws on findings from the largest study ever conducted into migrant working conditions, surveying almost 10,000 temporary visa holders nationwide. The research reveals widespread underpayment and exploitation, with many employers allegedly avoiding obligations under the Fair Work Act through recurring unlawful practices.

Titled "Off the Books: Inside Australia’s Hidden System of Migrant Exploitation", the report also outlines a series of proposed reforms aimed at closing legal gaps and strengthening protections for migrant workers across Australia.

A recent study of migrant working conditions reveals a dire system in which many employers systematically underpay migrants.

For UTS law graduate, Gianluca, guest lectures in the Legal Futures Major opened doors to the people and ideas shaping Australia’s tech law landscape. From insights on AI governance by Nicholas Davis to reconnecting with leading data lawyer Peter Leonard during national policy work, those early classroom lessons turned into real-world opportunities.
