🇩🇪 Dorian, a German international student, has taken his legal studies beyond borders, building global expertise and creating new opportunities for an international career in law.

Dorian moved to Sydney to pursue a Master of Laws (LL.M.) at UTS, drawn by the university's unique approach to legal education. He was particularly interested in the intersection of technology and law, including how emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence are researched, analysed and debated in legal contexts.

“I was very intrigued by the mix of technology and law,” he says, as well as UTS's strong connections to industry and the broader legal profession. Through guest lectures from academics and industry experts, Dorian found himself exposed to diverse perspectives that expanded his understanding of the legal landscape. The opportunity to complete a supervised research thesis was another major draw, allowing him to pursue in-depth research on a topic of personal interest while working closely with academic mentors. 💡

Studying in Australia has given Dorian exposure to a different legal tradition and an opportunity to develop legal expertise in English. He believes completing “an English-speaking degree in a foreign country and legal system” provides a significant advantage, demonstrating both language proficiency and an ability to succeed in a new academic and legal environment.

⚖️ The benefits, he says, extend far beyond legal practice. An international legal qualification can open doors to opportunities across Europe, Australia and other English-speaking countries, offering advantages for careers in multinational corporations, government agencies, policy development and international advocacy.

🇲🇿 From Mozambique to Sydney, Benito is building more than an engineering career, he's helping create a home away from home for African students at UTS.

A second-year Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) student majoring in Mechanical and Mechatronics Engineering, Benito arrived in Sydney in September 2024 and began his journey through UTS College's fast-track Diploma of Engineering before transitioning to UTS in 2025. Driven by a passion to learn more and challenge himself, he made the switch to a double major, embracing new opportunities both academically and personally. 📚

⭐️ Outside the classroom, Benito serves as President of the UTS African Society. After first joining as a volunteer, he quickly became involved in helping deliver events and build connections across the African student community.

The experience has been transformative. “I was able to find neighbouring cultures, experience new cultures, meet new people, get out of my comfort zone, and so much more,” he says.

As the first person in his family to move to Australia, Benito understands the importance of community. He reflects on a saying from home: “Para fortalecer uma comunidade, não há exercício melhor do que caminhar ao lado de quem ficou para trás,” meaning that for a community to move forward, everyone must be carried along, no matter who they are.

It's a philosophy that guides the African Society's mission to ensure students feel welcomed, supported and connected. "We want people to feel as welcome as possible to this new environment and that they don't feel alone. That they have a home here."

His message to current and future students: "Natural não treme" - natural doesn’t shake. You've already made it here, so don't be afraid to shine. ✨💙

Through the power of artificial intelligence, Professor Amir H. Gandomi and his team at UTS are improving long-term flood forecasting, with promising results up to 12 weeks ahead. Their groundbreaking work has earned the prestigious 2026 Journal of Hydrologic Engineering Best Research Paper Award, recognising its potential to help communities better prepare for extreme weather.

“If we can provide reliable information weeks rather than days ahead, authorities have more opportunity to prepare infrastructure, plan emergency responses and protect communities,” said Professor Amir H. Gandomi.

Duong (Sunny) Nguyen is using research to develop innovative solutions for a more sustainable future, tackling climate change while helping remove harmful pollutants from the environment. 🌱

🇻🇳 Originally from Vietnam, Sunny is a third-year PhD candidate in Environmental Engineering at UTS, where her research explores how microalgae can be used to address some of today's most pressing environmental challenges.

"My research focuses on using microalgae for carbon capture, biolubricant production, and the conversion of the spent biomass into biochar for the removal of heavy metals and PFAS - which are among the most persistent and challenging environmental contaminants." Sunny explains. 🔬

By combining renewable material production with environmental remediation, her work contributes to a circular bioeconomy, transforming waste into valuable resources. Her research has already demonstrated promising results, with microalgae oil proving suitable for sustainable biolubricant production and microalgae-derived biochar enabling effective removal of heavy metals and PFAS from contaminated water.

🏆 Her achievements have earned recognition including the 2026 PhD APR Scholarship and a Certificate of Commendation from the Embassy of Vietnam in Australia for her contributions to agricultural innovation and sustainable development.

Conducting her PhD at UTS has allowed Sunny to thrive in a globally recognised research environment. Ranked #1 in Australia for research citations per faculty and #37 globally (2027 QS World Ranking), UTS empowers researchers to create meaningful impact through innovation and collaboration. 🌏

For Xavier Cho, studying abroad was never just about earning a degree. It was about embracing new challenges and discovering where life's unexpected opportunities could lead. ⭐️

🇰🇷 Originally from South Korea, Xavier first came to Australia nearly a decade ago to study in Perth. What began as a desire to challenge himself by living and working in English soon became a life-changing adventure.

"At the time, I wanted to challenge myself by living and working in English," he says. "I had no idea how much that decision to study in Australia would eventually change my life." 🌏

Since graduating, Xavier has built an impressive international career across entertainment, advertising, marketing, content and events. In South Korea, he worked on campaigns involving artists including ITZY and JEON SOMI, as well as brands such as Samsung, Maybelline New York and SK Telecom. 🎤📸

Looking back, however, it wasn't just the planned opportunities that shaped him. "There were honestly so many moments when I thought, 'How did I end up doing this?'" he laughs. Despite an established career, Xavier found himself searching for deeper answers.

🧐 "The longer I worked, the more questions I had rather than answers," he explains. "I wanted to understand why people think, interpret and respond in the ways they do."

That curiosity led him to the Master of Strategic Communication at UTS. Ranked #1 Young University in Australia and top #100 in the QS World University Rankings, UTS has provided the ideal environment for Xavier to explore the social, cultural and human factors that shape communication.

Receiving the UTS Humanitarian Scholarship helped make that decision possible. "It made returning to study possible and gave me the opportunity to reconnect with subjects that genuinely make me curious and excited again." 💙
