The Department of Sociology, University of Brahmanbaria, successfully organized a field study trip for the students of the 252nd batch under the course Social Anthropology to Adwaita Mallabarman’s Malo Community at Gokorno Ghat, Brahmanbaria on Wednesday, November 5, 2025.
The purpose of this visit was to enhance students’ experiential learning by connecting classroom theories with real-world sociocultural contexts. This field immersion enabled students to closely observe and engage with the river-dependent Malo community, exploring themes related to environmental anthropology, cultural ecology, traditional livelihood practices, and the social and cultural dimensions of riverine communities. Particular emphasis was placed on understanding the current socio-ecological realities of the Titas River and the lived experiences of the Malo fisherfolk community.
Through direct interaction and ethnographic observation, students gained valuable insights into indigenous knowledge systems, livelihood challenges, environmental vulnerabilities, and community resilience—thereby strengthening their analytical and ethnographic skills.
A total of 10 students participated in this field trip. The study visit was supervised and guided by the course instructor, Mst. Sabina Tabasum, Lecturer, Department of Sociology, University of Brahmanbaria.
The community members of Gokorno Ghat warmly welcomed the group and generously shared their experiences, histories, and everyday practices, making the visit academically enriching and deeply meaningful.
The Department of Sociology expresses sincere gratitude to the University of Brahmanbaria authorities for their support and formal approval, and to the people of Gokorno Ghat for their kindness, cooperation, and hospitality.
