The Department of English Language & Publication Club (DELPC), USTC, marked the celebration of William Shakespeare’s Day with an Essay Writing Competition, followed by the Prize Giving Ceremony and the official Inauguration of the DELPC Club January session on 23 April 2026 at 12:00 PM in Room 1603. The event reflected the literary enthusiasm and creative engagement of the students, bringing together their passion for language, expression, and critical thought.

The program was graced by the presence of the Chairman of the Department of English, Ms. Shaila Binte Sattar; respected faculty members of the Department of English; Department of Bangladesh South Asia & Global Studies, and Department of Language & Linguistics along with the club advisors Ms. Afifa Rahman and Md. Nurul Anwar, whose encouragement and support added great value to the occasion. Their inspiring words highlighted the importance of literary appreciation, critical thinking, and active student participation in academic and co-curricular activities.

The ceremony featured opening speeches, poetry recitation, a short video on Shakespeare, and a club promotional video, creating a vibrant and engaging atmosphere. Certificates were awarded to all participants, while the winners were specially recognized for their outstanding performance and creativity.

The event concluded with the Prize Giving Ceremony, celebrating the achievements of the participants and marking a successful beginning for the DELPC Club. This occasion stands as a meaningful step towards promoting literary culture and collaborative engagement among students and faculty members.

The Department of English of the University of Science and Technology (USTC) organized the Freshers’ Orientation Program at the USTC premises on 11 January, 2026 in Room 601. The program was arranged to warmly welcome the new students of the 45th Batch of the BA in English Language and Literature program of the department.



The program was graced by the Honorable Vice Chancellor of the university, Prof. Dr. Mohammed Solaiman, as the Chief Guest. Other respected guests included Professor Dr. Nurul Absar, Treasurer; Dr. Gurupada Chakrabarty, Dean, Faculty of Social Science and Humanities; Dr. Md. Zia Uddin, Controller of Examinations; Dr. Hadaate Ullah, Director, IQAC; Dr. Aninda Kumar Nath, Chairman, Central Admission Committee; and Mr. Abdul Motaleb Bhuyan, Proctor, USTC. The program was convened by Md. Nurul Anwar, Assistant Professor, Department of English, and the session was chaired by Ms. Shaila Binte Sattar, Chairperson of the department.



The program started with an inaugural speech by the convener. He said that “language is not just a common tool for communication but also a way to understand the real meaning of messages.” He mentioned that “the world today is dominated by technology, politics, and cultural power,” and studying English helps students “think critically and understand their own place in society as well as others.” He also said that “the mission of the department is not only to make students read books but also to help them think from different perspectives.”



Three presentations were delivered after the convener’s speech. Mr. Hemal Chowdhury, Lecturer, Department of English, spoke about the English Club and his Debate Club and encouraged students “to be part of the club” to improve their English language skills. Ms. Esh*ta Khanam Karu, Senior Lecturer, Department of English, talked about “the importance of 21st-century skill development,” English learning, and the OBE curriculum. Ms. Sabiha Sabrin, Assistant Professor, Department of English, discussed the university’s grading policy and other exam-related issues that students need to be aware of. A fresh student, on behalf of the newcomers, expressed her excitement for their future journey, and highlighted the deparment's supportive environment.

The Chief Guest of the session, Honorable Vice Chancellor, praised the organizers. He said, “The department has strong faculty members and often organizes effective academic activities.” He also appreciated “the faculty speeches and their presentations on grading policy, GPA, and coursework.” Prof. Dr. Nurul Absar, the Guest of Honor of the program and Treasurer of USTC also emphasized “the importance of English in the modern world.” Other distinguished guests also invited the students to utilize the opportunity of being the students of the Department of English to explore the world as global learners.



The program ended with a vote of thanks from the Chairperson of the Department, Ms. Shaila Binte Sattar. She congratulated the students for selecting the department to embark on their academic journey. She encouraged the students “to synthesize their knowledge of language and literature in different spheres of their life”. She also advised them to “enlighten themselves with the positive qualities of human beings”.



The program came to an end successfully with active participation of the students, faculty members, and volunteers leaving a positive spirit and a hope for a rapid progress of the department through collaboration, hard work, and wholehearted dedication.

The Department of English Language and Literature (DELL), USTC, successfully organized a Book Review Session on 25 November 2025, conducted by the students of the 39th Batch and the 43rd Batch. The event was honored by the presence of the Honourable Vice-Chancellor of USTC, Professor Dr. Mohammed Solaiman; the Dean and Advisor, Dr. Gurupada Chakraborty; the esteemed Chairman of DELL, Assistant Professor Ms. Shaila Binte Sattar; and distinguished faculty members, whose support and encouragement greatly enriched the program.

Guided by Lecturer Syeda Rahela Akter, the session provided an academic platform for students to engage with a variety of literary texts, present their reflections, and participate in thoughtful scholarly discussions. The program stood as a commendable celebration of literature, analytical thinking, and the collaborative academic culture that characterizes DELL.
