🌍 Plastic Pollution in Our Oceans
Plastic pollution is one of the world's biggest environmental challenges. Every year, millions of tons of plastic enter the oceans, harming marine life and polluting coastlines. Research shows the Philippines contributes the largest amount of river-borne plastic waste to the oceans, followed by India, Malaysia, China, and Indonesia. These figures reflect mismanaged plastic waste reaching the sea through rivers, not total plastic production.
An estimated 11 million metric tons of plastic enter the oceans each year, with about 80% coming from land-based sources. Improving waste management, reducing single-use plastics, increasing recycling, and raising public awareness are essential to protecting our oceans for future generations.
