Commemorating the 250th Birth Anniversary of Jane Austen
On 19 December at 11:00 a.m., the Department of English, Cox’s Bazar International University, organized a discussion session and cultural program to commemorate the 250th birth anniversary of Jane Austen, one of the most celebrated novelists in world literature. The event was held at the university auditorium and witnessed enthusiastic participation from faculty members, students, researchers, and literature enthusiasts.
The program commenced with an inaugural address by the Honourable Dean, Professor Kazi Mostain Billah, who eloquently highlighted Jane Austen’s enduring literary contributions, her insightful portrayal of society, and her progressive representation of women within the socio-cultural framework of her time.
This was followed by a student-led essay presentation session, where participants critically explored Austen’s novels, her mastery of character construction, thematic concerns, and her lasting influence on English literature.
One of the most captivating segments of the event was the role-play performance, in which students brought to life iconic characters from Jane Austen’s novels. Through expressive acting and dialogue, they vividly recreated Austen’s literary world, offering the audience an engaging and immersive experience.
The program also featured a letter-reading segment, evoking the literary atmosphere of Austen’s era and providing deeper insight into the stylistic and cultural nuances of her time. Additionally, students presented character portrayals inspired by Austen’s novels, complete with period-appropriate costumes and aesthetics, effectively capturing the historical essence of her fictional universe.
The primary objective of the event was to foster students’ interest in world literature, encourage creative expression, and introduce Jane Austen’s rich literary legacy to a new generation of learners.
The event was graced by the presence of the Academic Advisor of the Department of English, Associate Professor Sadat Zaman Khan, along with all faculty members of the department. The active and spontaneous participation of students, researchers, and literature lovers made the celebration both memorable and intellectually enriching.
