Meet our MA in English graduate, Abu Obayda, who has recently joined Shanta Group as a CRM.

“The Professional Communication course I took with Dr. Farzana Akhter helped me immensely. Her lectures, especially the interview session at Bdjobs as part of the course assessment, truly inspired me to believe in myself and helped me recover from the trauma of my previous job.

I am grateful to the MA in English Program offered by the Department of English, East West University, for providing me with such a valuable learning experience.”

Congratulations to our MA in English student, Afnan Bintey Helal, who under the supervision of Dr. Farzana Akhter, successfully defended her thesis today. The title of her dissertation is “Mind the Water”: A Blue Humanities Reading of Women’s Aqueous Identity in A River Called Titash, Cry, River, Cry, and A Seaman’s Wife.

Her research demonstrates how water provides women an alternative material space for their self-expression, agency, and resistance. She brings Bangladeshi river narratives into the Blue Humanities’ predominantly marine-focused field and explores the intimate material connection between rivers and women.

The Writing Centre, Department of English, East West University, hosted a lecture titled “Building Cultural Bridges through Literature and Celebrating Women” on Thursday, August 6, featuring Ms. Qaisra Shahraz MBE JP FRSA, an internationally acclaimed novelist, educationist, and peace and gender activist.

Ms. Shahraz has devoted her distinguished career to literature, education, intercultural dialogue, and community engagement. During the lecture, she discussed her writing process and reflected on negotiating her multiple identities as a Pakistani-born British Muslim woman, while challenging monolithic representations of Muslims and Muslim communities around the world.

Drawing on her extensive research and engagement with Muslim women’s experiences, Ms. Shahraz shared insights into her work advocating for women's voices through literature and the arts. She also introduced her vision for MACFEST (Muslim Arts and Culture Festival), which she founded to celebrate artistic excellence, promote social inclusion and community cohesion, challenge Islamophobia, and foster meaningful dialogue across communities.

The session concluded with an engaging question-and-answer segment, during which participants actively interacted with the speaker and shared their thoughts and questions.
