A special lecture on “Weaving” was delivered at Design Studio I, Department of Architecture, Bangladesh University, by Ar. Nami Parvin.

A graduate of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET), Ar. Nami shared how the logic of weaving, knots, and interlacing can inform spatial thinking, material exploration, and design sensitivity in early architectural education.

Beyond her architectural practice, she is also the founder of বয়ন - Boyon, a macramé-based venture creating handcrafted pieces ranging from home décor to everyday usable accessories. Her journey beautifully demonstrated how craft, entrepreneurship, and design thinking can intersect.

Studio instructors Ar. Rafiqul Islam Tushar and Ar. Augustin Anjan were present during the session, which turned into an engaging and insightful discussion for the first-year students.

The lecture offered students a refreshing perspective where architecture meets craft, hand, material, and patience.

Students from the Photography course at the Department of Architecture, Bangladesh University, recently visited the Zebun Nessa Mosque, designed by Studio Morphogenesis. The project was led by architect Saiqa Iqbal Meghna.

Guided by course teacher Noufel Sharif Sojol, the visit offered students a rare opportunity to experience how light, material, scale, and silence come together to shape a powerful architectural narrative through the lens of photography.

In 2025, Time Magazine recognized Zebun Nessa Mosque as one of the World’s Greatest Places, making it the first architectural project from Bangladesh to receive this global honor for architectural excellence.

Accompanying the group were Assistant Professor Muzaiana Naomi Khan and Senior Lecturer Sabbir Wadud Shohan, enriching the visit with academic insight and discussion.

Visits like these connect classroom learning with lived architectural experience—where students don’t just study space, but learn to see, frame, and interpret it.

Today, a group of students from the Department of Architecture, Bangladesh University, visited the exhibition Spaces of Belonging, an exhibition on the architecture of Muzharul Islam as part of an academic learning experience.

The visit was conducted under the supervision of three faculty members: Sheikh Itmam Soud, Rafiqul Islam, and Mahtab Kabir Anjan.

Held at the Faculty of Fine Arts, University of Dhaka, the exhibition features powerful photographs by Niklaus Graber that reveal how Muzharul Islam’s architecture continues to shape ideas of space, climate, community, and belonging.

For the students, this was more than a gallery visit. It was an opportunity to encounter, firsthand, the spatial language of a master whose work they study in drawings and texts; now experienced through light, material, proportion, and lived atmosphere.

A day of learning, reflection, and quiet inspiration.

Discussion on Water Urbanism
Speaker: Ar. Iqbal Habib, Adviser, arch.BU
Date: 2 May 2026

Synopsis of the Discussion

Water has long shaped how settlements in Bangladesh take form, evolve, and adapt. Over time, this relationship has weakened, and in many cities, lakes and canals have receded into the background, often treated as residual spaces or problems to be managed.

The discussion brings together a series of projects that attempt to restore this connection. Spanning different regions of the country—from Dhanmondi Lake and Hatirjheel in Dhaka to Shakuni Lake in Madaripur, and the Baburail Canal and City Park in Narayanganj—it explores how each site reflects a unique narrative of water, people, and transformation.

The projects are not presented as completed outcomes. Instead, the talk reads them as evolving processes. Each begins with a specific condition, such as encroachment, pollution, or fragmentation, and progresses through layers of negotiation, design, and time. The result extends beyond the recovery of a waterbody, shaping new relationships between landscape, movement, and public life.

The session considers how water can guide urban form by shaping edges, linking systems, and opening shared spaces within dense and often contested environments. It also addresses the practical realities of working in Bangladesh, where design moves beyond drawings into sustained engagement with institutions, communities, and changing ground conditions.

Through these reflections, the session invites a broader understanding of Water Urbanism as a continuous practice of reconnecting water, city, and landscape.
