The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences has decided to award the 2026 in Chemistry to Henri B. Kagan and Kenso Soai “for the discovery of non-linear effects and autocatalysis in asymmetric organic synthesis.”

Some molecules, such as amino acids, exist as two variants that are each other’s mirror image. However, living organisms only contain one of these mirror images. How chemical asymmetry such as this could have emerged was long a mystery to chemists. Henri B. Kagan and Kenso Soai have been awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2026 for discovering a solution to this puzzle.

Life’s chemistry is what chemists call homochiral, after the Greek words for “same” and “hand”. Like hands, all amino acids exist as two mirrored variants, but only one of them is found in the proteins in your cells. The other is rarely found in nature.

For a long time, chemists wondered how homochirality can emerge. When they began to experiment with chemical reactions that can form two mirrored molecules, they always obtained equal proportions of both in their test tubes. However, chemists strived to produce only one of these mirror images, because in the development of molecules that will interact with living beings – such as in pharmaceuticals – only one mirror image will have the desired effect.

The Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2026 recognises discoveries that have enabled chemists to drive chemical reactions that lead to homochirality.

Henri Kagan took the first decisive step in 1986, when he discovered a new way of manipulating chemical reactions. This allowed him to create a greater excess of one of the mirror images than had previously been thought possible.

Kenso Soai took the next step. In 1995, a key publication describes how he designed the first ever chemical reaction that had the potential to be homochiral. In 2003, he finally succeeded. He presented a reaction in which only one of the two possible mirror images was formed. Other than life itself, no one had previously achieved this feat.

Thanks to Henri Kagan and Kenso Soai, we now know how homochirality can emerge. Their discoveries have been decisive for chemists who design reactions for the manufacture of pharmaceuticals.

Mr. Md. Mesbha Uddin Ali, Chairman of Wega Group, has been appointed Chairman of the newly constituted Board of Trustees (BoT) of BGMEA University of Fashion & Technology (BUFT). The appointment was made at the board’s inaugural meeting on September 28, where members discussed key matters relating to the university’s governance, administration and future development. The newly constituted Board of Trustees reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening BUFT’s academic and institutional capabilities and advancing the university’s continued growth and development. The meeting also underscored the importance of enhancing BUFT’s contribution to education and professional skills development in Bangladesh’s textile, apparel and fashion industries. অযোগ্যতার সবচেয়ে বড় অহংকার হলো—নিজের চারপাশে এমন মানুষ জড়ো করা, যারা কখনো ‘না’ বলতে জানে না।

একজন মানুষ যখন নিজের ভুল শুনতে চায় না, তখন সে ধীরে ধীরে সত্য কথা বলা মানুষদের থেকে দূরে সরে যায়। তার চারপাশে তৈরি হয় এমন একটি বলয়, যেখানে সবাই শুধু বলে—“জি স্যার”, “ঠিক বলেছেন”, “অবশ্যই হবে।” কেউ প্রশ্ন করে না, কেউ দ্বিমত পোষণ করে না, কেউ ভুল ধরিয়ে দেয় না। আর মানুষটি তখন নিজের সিদ্ধান্তকে সত্য মনে করতে শুরু করে—শুধু সত্য বলার মতো মানুষগুলো তার পাশে নেই বলে।

সবচেয়ে বিপজ্জনক বিষয় হলো, প্রশংসা মানুষকে যতটা না শক্তিশালী করে, তার চেয়েও বেশি দুর্বল করে দিতে পারে—যদি সেই প্রশংসার মধ্যে সত্য না থাকে। একজন নেতার পাশে এমন মানুষ থাকা জরুরি, যে প্রয়োজনে চোখে চোখ রেখে বলতে পারে, “স্যার, এই সিদ্ধান্তটা ভুল হতে পারে।” কারণ যে মানুষটি আপনার ভুল ধরিয়ে দেয়, সে আপনার শত্রু নয়; বরং সে-ই আপনার পতন ঠেকানোর শেষ প্রহরী হতে পারে।

একটি প্রতিষ্ঠানে যখন যোগ্যতার চেয়ে আনুগত্য বেশি মূল্য পায়, তখন সেখানে ধীরে ধীরে মেধাবীরা চুপ হয়ে যায়, সত্য কথা বলা মানুষগুলো দূরে সরে যায়, আর সিদ্ধান্ত নিতে শুরু করে এমন কিছু মানুষ—যারা প্রশ্ন না করে শুধু সম্মতি দিতে জানে। তখন বাইরে থেকে সবকিছু শান্ত ও সুন্দর দেখালেও ভেতরে ভেতরে প্রতিষ্ঠানের ভিত্তি দুর্বল হতে থাকে।

মনে রাখবেন, আপনার চারপাশে কতজন মানুষ আপনার প্রশংসা করছে—সেটা আপনার শক্তির প্রমাণ নয়। বরং কতজন মানুষ আপনার ভুলের সময় আপনাকে সত্য কথাটা বলতে সাহস পায়—সেটাই আপনার নেতৃত্বের আসল পরীক্ষা।

কারণ যে নেতৃত্ব ‘না’ শুনতে পারে না, সে একদিন বাস্তবতার ‘না’ও শুনতে বাধ্য হয়। আর তখন পাশে থাকা শত “জি স্যার” মানুষও সেই পতন থামাতে পারে না।
