The Department of Sociology has started functioning since June, 2005, keeping in view the demand of this discipline in Bangladesh. Sociology, as an emergent discipline is the driving force and the main determinant of the development in every society. Bangladesh University has always contributed in the development, organization and progress of education and human resource development in Bangladesh.

Realizing the significance of this popular social science, the initiative was taken to establish the Department of Sociology to address developing high quality professionals and behavioral scientists that are committed to pursuit of excellence, and are endowed with vision, courage, dedication, and improving academic standard for making a significant and meaning-full contribution towards the social and economic betterment of Bangladesh. Students who have already passed out with BSS (Honors) degree from this University are well established in jobs and careers in different sectors in the country. The Department has excellent and well qualified faculty members with degrees including Ph.D. from home and abroad.
