Brac University seeks name change to Sir Fazle Hasan Abed University
The proposal specified the new name as Sir Fazle Hasan Abed University, with the abbreviated name Abed University
The Board of Trustees (BoT) of Brac University wishes to change the name of the university to pay tribute to late Brac founder Sir Fazle Hasan Abed.
The decision to rename the university as Sir Fazle Hasan Abed University was taken at the 31st meeting of the BoT on October 31, 2019, when Sir Abed was still alive. He died on December 20 the same year.
The meeting was chaired by BoT Chairperson Tamara Hasan Abed with nine other members present.
Three years after the decision, the Brac University authorities began the official process of changing the name by seeking permission from the Secondary and Higher Education Division under the Ministry of Education on May 28.
The proposal specified the new name as Sir Fazle Hasan Abed University, with the abbreviated name Abed University.
The Secondary and Higher Education Division has written to the University Grants Commission (UGC) for its opinion on the name change.
