BRAC James P Grant School of Public Health Advancing Education, Training, Research, and Impact for Health Equity in the Global South.

BRAC James P Grant School of Public Health (BRAC JPGSPH) was founded in 2004 in Dhaka, Bangladesh to address the unmet public health challenges particular to Asia, Africa and South America. The School builds capacity and contributes to Public Health by preparing individuals to become public health leaders, practitioners, critical thinkers, researchers, advocates, and stewards in order to enable concrete changes to improve the lives of disadvantaged populations locally, regionally and internationally. The School's Institutional partner is BRAC, the worldโ€™s largest NGO, reaching over 100 million people in Bangladesh and working in 11 countries in Africa and Asia.

BRAC James P Grant School of Public Health (JPGSPH) has joined the WHO Health Inequality Monitoring (HIM) Network in 2026. The WHO Health Inequality Monitoring (HIM) Network is a WHO-led initiative that brings together academic institutions, nongovernmental organisations, and governmental agencies with expertise in health inequality monitoring.

It was established to advance health equity and universal health coverage and to support the implementation of WHOโ€™s Inequality Monitoring and Analysis Strategy, in alignment with World Health Assembly Resolution WHA74.16 and the Fourteenth General Programme of Work (GPW 14). Its mission is to support Member States in monitoring health inequalities, and it serves as a platform to raise awareness and advocate for stronger monitoring at global, regional, and country levels.

Two researchers from the Centre of Excellence for Urban Equity and Health (CUEH), BRAC JPGSPH, Baby Naznin, Research Fellow, and Fariha Nowshin, Research Assistant, are joining this yearโ€™s TOT programme. After successfully completing the training, the researchers will be certified as competent HIM 101 trainers and can use WHOโ€™s training plans, presentations, and HEAT demo scripts to deliver health inequality monitoring courses

Zahidul Quayyum, PhD, Professor and Co-Director of CUEH, BRAC JPGSPH, BRAC University, has been selected as one of the members of the Networkโ€™s Steering Committee with responsibility for providing strategic direction for the Networkโ€™s work. In this role, he will guide the Networkโ€™s strategy, co-organise its meetings with the Secretariat, oversee working groups, and monitor performance to recommend improvements to WHO.

๐Ÿ“Š Wrapping Up: Monitoring and Evaluation of Public Health Programmes

The final day of the Monitoring and Evaluation of Public Health Programmes course at BRAC JPGSPH brought together group presentations, constructive feedback, and reflections on key learnings.

Students presented their Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) plans, received consolidated feedback, and explored how these plans are applied in real-world public health practice. The session also connected key lessons to the course outcomes, reinforcing the importance of effective M&E in designing, implementing, and improving public health programmes.

The course concluded with a group photo, capturing the shared learning and collaboration throughout the journey. ๐Ÿ“ธ

Dr Laura Reichenbach, Dean of BRAC James P Grant School of Public Health (BRAC JPGSPH), and Dr Farzana Misha, Associate Professor at BRAC JPGSPH, participated in the 3rd Global Heat Forum, held from 6 to 9 October 2026 in Bangkok, Thailand.

As a regional partner of the Global Heat Health Information Network (GHHIN), BRAC JPGSPH contributed to the South Asia Hubโ€™s first four country assessments on extreme heat in Bangladesh, India, Nepal and Bhutan by preparing the Bangladesh country brief.

Titled Living with Heat in Bangladesh: Heat-Health Risks, Vulnerability and Emerging Responses, the assessment highlights Bangladeshโ€™s progress in heat preparedness and identifies priorities for strengthening heat action plans and health surveillance systems to better protect communities from extreme heat.

The initiative aims to strengthen regional collaboration, share evidence, and support coordinated action to address the growing health risks associated with extreme heat.

Through the SHINE project (Strengthening Health Systems by Improving Community Health Workersโ€™ Mental Wellbeing and Empowerment), mental wellbeing and supportive supervision training are making a difference in the lives of Community Health Workers (CHWs), their relationships, workplaces and communities.
