The growing prevalence of English Medium Instruction (EMI) in higher education has prompted closer consideration of academic-language development, multilingual participation, linguistic inequality, and the preparation of teachers working in English-medium systems. EAP and related language-support teachers occupy a distinctive position because their responsibilities centre on language and academic communication. The professional capability through which they reason when pedagogical, linguistic, and institutional considerations support competing responses remains insufficiently theorised. This conceptual paper develops multilingual pedagogical reasoning as a framework for language-teacher development in multilingual EMI higher education. Using a problem-driven theory synthesis, the paper engaged selected EMI, EAP, teacher-cognition, critical multilingual, language-management, agency, and professional-identity scholarship iteratively and purposively, assigning a distinct explanatory function to each retained theoretical resource. The synthesis defines multilingual pedagogical reasoning as situated professional judgement through which language-support teachers interpret consequential language-related dilemmas, consider plausible responses, and justify choices under particular pedagogical, linguistic, professional, and institutional conditions. The resulting framework distinguishes reasoned judgement from enactability and presents multilingual practice as one possible response among several. It incorporates evidence-informed reconsideration and positions professional identity as a site where responsibility and legitimate expertise are reconsidered. Four relational propositions and explicit scope conditions make these claims available for empirical examination. The framework offers a theoretically specified basis for professional learning centred on authentic pedagogical dilemmas. It remains provisional and open to qualification, reformulation, or rejection through practitioner appraisal and subsequent empirical investigation.

Drawing on his doctoral ethnography at an orthodox Qawmi madrasa in rural Bangladesh, Dr. Chowdhury will explore what it takes to produce critical knowledge from the Global South and consider its implications for Southernising TESOL. The talk will examine resistance to English as a language of economic prosperity alongside its postcolonial appropriation for Islamic purposes, challenging monolithic and instrumental understandings of English as a tool for development. It will particularly focus on the methodological processes through which such perspectives emerge, including negotiating access, building rapport, navigating sociocultural and geopolitical complexities, and engaging with the nuanced and layered positions of research participants. The session will further foreground the importance of moving beyond conducting research on marginalised communities towards producing knowledge with them and bringing their voices more meaningfully into TESOL research.

Dr. Qumrul Hasan Chowdhury holds a PhD in Applied Linguistics from Kingโ€™s College London and an MA in TESOL from the UCL Institute of Education. He also participated in the Fulbright Foreign Language Teaching Assistantship (FLTA) Program at North Carolina State University. His research interests include language, religion and development; the political economy of ELT; and the Southern turn in applied linguistics. His work has appeared in leading journals, including Applied Linguistics, TESOL Quarterly, World Englishes, Multilingua, and the Journal of English as a Lingua Franca.

On September 17, 2026, BRAC Institute of Languages (BIL) held a certificate awarding ceremony for the third batch its course ๐‚๐ž๐ซ๐ญ๐ข๐Ÿ๐ข๐œ๐š๐ญ๐ž ๐ข๐ง ๐“๐„๐’๐Ž๐‹ ๐Ÿ๐จ๐ซ ๐’๐ฎ๐ฌ๐ญ๐š๐ข๐ง๐š๐›๐ฅ๐ž ๐ƒ๐ž๐ฏ๐ž๐ฅ๐จ๐ฉ๐ฆ๐ž๐ง๐ญ ๐š๐ง๐ ๐’๐จ๐œ๐ข๐š๐ฅ ๐„๐ช๐ฎ๐ข๐ญ๐ฒ at BRAC University. Blending English language teaching with sustainable development and social equity, this course has been introduced to prepare educators not just to teach, but to empower. With a focus on reflective practice and supporting diverse learners, it hopes to equip teachers to create classrooms where language learning drives equity, justice, and real social change.

The event began with the reflections of the students from diverse backgrounds who have completed the course. The participants of the third batch reflected on the knowledge and practical experience they gained throughout the 7-week course, mentioning that they are already implementing SD and SE principles into their respective classroom practices and materials to create more meaningful and inclusive learning experiences.

She highlighted how educators with the knowledge of sustainability can utilize low resource educational settings, and emphasized the importance of such professional development programs in preparing teachers to meet diverse student needs for todayโ€™s language learners.

Focusing on Bangladesh, he will examine how English operates as linguistic capital while potentially reproducing inequalities, particularly for students from Bangla-medium educational backgrounds.

Moving beyond the idea of teachers as passive policy implementers, Mr. Rahman foregrounds ๐ญ๐ž๐š๐œ๐ก๐ž๐ซ ๐š๐ ๐ž๐ง๐œ๐ฒ and ๐ญ๐ซ๐š๐ง๐ฌ๐ฅ๐š๐ง๐ ๐ฎ๐š๐ ๐ข๐ง๐  as localised โ€œpolicy-in-action,โ€ opening possibilities for more multilingual and equitable approaches to EMI.

Mr. Rahmanโ€™s work, developed over a decade of research, advances ๐š๐ง๐ญ๐ข-๐ง๐ž๐จ๐ฅ๐ข๐›๐ž๐ซ๐š๐ฅ ๐š๐ง๐ ๐ฆ๐ฎ๐ฅ๐ญ๐ข๐ฅ๐ข๐ง๐ ๐ฎ๐š๐ฅ ๐š๐ฉ๐ฉ๐ซ๐จ๐š๐œ๐ก๐ž๐ฌ to education and investigates how language policy can reproduce inequality across Asian multilingual contexts. His research has appeared in leading international journals, including Applied Linguistics Review, Asian Englishes, Current Issues in Language Planning, English Today, International Journal of Bilingual Education and Bilingualism, Journal of Language, Identity, and Education, Journal of Teacher Education, Linguistics & Education, Pedagogy, Culture & Society, and World Englishes. He also serves on the editorial boards of Computers and Composition (Elsevier) and Crossings: A Journal of English Studies (ULAB Press).

Chinese Culture Day 2026 | Celebrating Culture, Language, and Educational Opportunities ๐Ÿ“š๐Ÿ‡ง๐Ÿ‡ฉ๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ณ

BRAC Institute of Languages (BIL), BRAC University, hosted Chinese Culture Day on 3 September 2026, celebrating Chinese language and culture while strengthening educational and cultural connections between Bangladesh and China.

๐‹๐š๐๐ฒ ๐’๐ฒ๐ž๐๐š ๐’๐š๐ซ๐ฐ๐š๐ญ ๐€๐›๐ž๐, Advisor at BRAC Institute of Languages, and ๐๐ซ๐จ๐Ÿ๐ž๐ฌ๐ฌ๐จ๐ซ ๐’๐ก๐š๐ข๐ฅ๐š ๐’๐ฎ๐ฅ๐ญ๐š๐ง๐š, Professor and Director at BRAC Institute of Languages, emphasised the importance of language, cultural exchange, and education in strengthening the bond between Bangladesh and China.

A key highlight was the Study in China & Scholarship Session, conducted by ๐Œ๐ซ. ๐ˆ๐ฆ๐š๐ฆ ๐™๐š๐Ÿ๐š๐ซ ๐๐ฎ๐ฆ๐š๐ง๐ž๐ž, Senior Lecturer at BRAC Institute of Languages, who completed his MA in Applied Linguistics from Northwestern Polytechnical University, China. The session introduced students to higher education opportunities in China and major scholarships, including the Chinese Government Scholarship, university scholarships, provincial scholarships, and Chinese-language scholarships for Bachelorโ€™s, Masterโ€™s, PhD, and language programmes.

The programme also highlighted BILโ€™s contribution to Chinese-language education. To date, 4,993 students have graduated from BIL, and approximately 75 students have received scholarships to study in China at the Bachelorโ€™s, Masterโ€™s, and PhD levels at leading Chinese universities.

Chinese Culture Day provided students with a platform to explore Chinese language, culture, higher education, and scholarship opportunities, reflecting BILโ€™s continued commitment to fostering educational exchange and stronger people-to-people connections between Bangladesh and China. โœจ
