We are pleased to announce that 𝐃𝐫. 𝐍𝐚𝐬𝐫𝐢𝐧 𝐏𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐢𝐧, Senior Lecturer in the Department of English and Modern Languages at North South University, Bangladesh, will join us as a “𝐑𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐒𝐜𝐡𝐨𝐥𝐚𝐫” at the 2nd International Conference on Epistemic Reconfigurations in Language Studies (ERLS): Decolonial Dialogues, Transformative Pathways, and Empowered Practices, organized by BRAC Institute of Languages (BIL), BRAC University, Dhaka, Bangladesh.

In her presentation titled “𝐑𝐞𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐖𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐧’𝐬 𝐋𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩 𝐢𝐧 𝐁𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐥𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐬𝐡𝐢 𝐏𝐫𝐢𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐔𝐧𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬: 𝐀 𝐍𝐚𝐫𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐈𝐧𝐪𝐮𝐢𝐫𝐲 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐨 𝐃𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐧𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐏𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐞𝐬,” Dr. Pervin will explore how women leaders navigate patriarchy, gendered expectations, institutional hierarchies, and socio-cultural norms in Bangladeshi private universities.

Drawing on women’s lived experiences, the study moves beyond conventional Western-centric leadership models to foreground relational leadership, resilience, agency, and transformative practice. From a decolonial perspective, it positions women’s narratives as important sites of knowledge production and resistance, bringing Global South perspectives into conversations on leadership in higher education.

Dr. Pervin’s research interests include higher education policy, digital inequalities, and language planning. She earned her PhD from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia and holds master’s degrees from the University of Glasgow and Nottingham Trent University.

The achievements of Professor Shaila Sultana, Mr. Abdul Karim, Ms. Bineeta Rahman, Mr. Easir Arafat, Ms. Nashrah Sharfuddin, Mr. John Paul Shimanto Sarkar, and Ms. Tarannum Fatema Chowdhury further strengthened BIL’s research profile and demonstrated the Institute’s continuing commitment to globally engaged scholarship.

𝐌𝐫. 𝐒𝐡𝐚𝐡𝐧𝐚𝐰𝐚𝐳 𝐇𝐨𝐬𝐬𝐚𝐢𝐧, a Lecturer at BRAC Institute of Languages (BIL), BRAC University, facilitated a four-day workshop titled “𝐄𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐟𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐄𝐱𝐜𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞,” held from 17 to 24 August 2026, for around 20 administrative and non-academic staff members of BRAC University. The workshop was organised by the Human Resource Department of BRAC University through its Learning & Development wing.

The workshop equipped participants with practical skills in workplace communication, professional etiquette, public speaking, email writing, complaint handling, cross-departmental collaboration, and the responsible use of AI in professional communication.

With more than 14 years of experience in teaching professional communication, Mr. Hossain has conducted over 700 workshops and seminars in Bangladesh and abroad.

In her keynote presentation titled “𝐀𝐝𝐯𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐧 𝐄𝐩𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐦𝐢𝐜 𝐏𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐨𝐧 𝐄𝐧𝐠𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐡-𝐌𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐮𝐦 𝐈𝐧𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐢𝐧 𝐍𝐨𝐧-𝐀𝐧𝐠𝐥𝐨𝐩𝐡𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐱𝐭𝐬,” Professor Zheng will invite us to look beyond the conventional understanding of English-medium instruction (EMI) as simply an approach to teaching and learning through English.

Drawing on a series of research conducted mainly in China and Japan, she will examine EMI as a contested space where 𝐠𝐥𝐨𝐛𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐳𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧, 𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐮𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐜 𝐡𝐢𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐞𝐬, 𝐧𝐞𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐛𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐥 𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐜𝐞𝐬, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐞𝐩𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐦𝐢𝐜 𝐩𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐫 𝐝𝐲𝐧𝐚𝐦𝐢𝐜𝐬 intersect. Her epistemic perspective draws attention to how EMI can risk perpetuating 𝐞𝐩𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐦𝐢𝐜 𝐢𝐧𝐣𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐞 and 𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐳𝐞𝐝 𝐩𝐨𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠, while emphasizing the need to recognize peripheral voices and indigenous practices as legitimate contributions to knowledge production.

The talk will also explore how 𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐮𝐚𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐠 and 𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐤𝐧𝐨𝐰𝐥𝐞𝐝𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐠 can create possibilities for more inclusive knowledge-making and enhance learners’ 𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐞𝐩𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐦𝐢𝐜 𝐦𝐨𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 in EMI contexts.

Professor Zheng is an internationally recognized scholar whose research interests include 𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐮𝐚𝐥 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐦𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐮𝐚𝐥 𝐞𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧, 𝐚𝐜𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐦𝐢𝐜 𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐲 𝐩𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐞𝐬, and 𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐮𝐚𝐠𝐞-𝐢𝐧-𝐞𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠. She serves as the Editor-in-Chief of Language, Culture and Curriculum and Co-Editor-in-Chief of System. We are privileged to welcome an outstanding panel of keynote speakers. 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐟𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐨𝐫 𝐀𝐧𝐚 𝐃𝐞𝐮𝐦𝐞𝐫𝐭 from University of Cape Town will interrogate conventional research methodologies through a decolonial and relational epistemological lens. 𝐇𝐨𝐧𝐨𝐫𝐚𝐫𝐲 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐟𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐨𝐫 𝐃𝐚𝐯𝐢𝐝 𝐁𝐥𝐨𝐜𝐤 from Universitat Pompeu Fabra, Barcelona will examine the implications of contemporary global capitalism and neoliberalism for language studies research. 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐟𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐨𝐫 𝐏𝐞𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐈. 𝐃𝐞 𝐂𝐨𝐬𝐭𝐚 from Michigan State University will explore how Generative AI is reshaping TESOL teacher education, with particular attention to emotion, identity, and pedagogical practice in the Global South.

In his presentation titled “𝐋𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐮𝐚𝐠𝐞-𝐚𝐬-𝐆𝐢𝐟𝐭: 𝐑𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐟𝐢𝐠𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐄𝐩𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐦𝐢𝐜 𝐅𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐌𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐮𝐚𝐥 𝐐𝐮𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡,” Dr. Ahmed will critically examine several dominant metaphors used in multilingual qualitative research, including language as a tool, resource, bridge, medium, repertoire, and capital. While these metaphors have contributed valuable insights, they often portray language instrumentally as something researchers can manage, mobilize, exchange, or strategically deploy.

As an alternative, Dr. Ahmed will develop language-as-gift, a conceptual framework grounded in reciprocity and relational accountability. Drawing on Marcel Mauss’s account of gift exchange and Robin Wall Kimmerer’s reflections on Indigenous gift economies, he will argue that this framework can shift multilingual research from utility and extraction toward relationality, care, and responsibility.

𝐌𝐬. 𝐓𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐧𝐮𝐦 𝐅𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐦𝐚 𝐂𝐡𝐨𝐰𝐝𝐡𝐮𝐫𝐲, Senior Lecturer at BRAC Institute of Languages (BIL), BRAC University, was privileged to be one of the 𝐒𝐩𝐨𝐭𝐥𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐒𝐩𝐞𝐚𝐤𝐞𝐫𝐬 at the 2nd International Conference on Decolonizing English (ICDE–2026), held at the University of Jaffna, Sri Lanka, from 12 to 14 August 2026.

She presented her research paper titled “𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐫𝐨𝐠𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐈𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐍𝐞𝐠𝐨𝐭𝐢𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧, 𝐈𝐧𝐯𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐁𝐞𝐥𝐨𝐧𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐠: 𝐁𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐥𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐬𝐡𝐢 𝐔𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐝𝐮𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐔.𝐒. 𝐌𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐮𝐚𝐥 𝐂𝐥𝐚𝐬𝐬𝐫𝐨𝐨𝐦𝐬.” The study explores the lived experiences of Bangladeshi undergraduates in U.S. multilingual classrooms, focusing on identity negotiation, investment in English, and learners’ sense of belonging within international educational contexts.

This study examines how 15 Bangladeshi undergraduates at U.S. public universities negotiate linguistic and cultural identities in English-dominant classrooms. Guided by Norton’s theory of investment and Darvin and Norton’s identity model, the findings reveal adjustment challenges, exclusion, and power dynamics that affect participation and belonging. The study recommends translingual practices and Bangladeshi scholarly materials to create more inclusive multilingual classrooms.

It was a distinct honour for Ms. Chowdhury to engage in insightful academic discussions and share an enriching scholarly platform with distinguished keynote and plenary speakers, including Professor Suresh Canagarajah of Pennsylvania State University, USA; Professor Bimali Indrarathne of Kotelawala Defence University, Sri Lanka; Professor Rhonda Oliver of Curtin University, Australia; Dr. Vydehi Rajapillai of the University of Brighton, UK; Professor Sender Dovchin of Curtin University, Australia; and Associate Professor Max Spotti of Tilburg University, the Netherlands.
