The academic orientation program for the 20th Batch (Semester) BSS (Honours) of the Department of International Relations, University of Dhaka (DU), was held on Monday, 18 May 2026, at the departmental classroom. Professor Dr. Abdus Salam, Pro-Vice Chancellor (Academic) of Dhaka University, attended the event as the Chief Guest.

Presided over by the Departmental Chairperson, Professor Dr. A.S.M. Ali Ashraf, the program featured Dr. Salma Malik, Associate Professor at Quaid-i-Azam University, Pakistan, as the Guest of Honour. Special guests included Professor Dr. Mohammad Mainul Islam, Acting Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences, and Ambassador Mashfee Binte Shams, former Rector of the Foreign Service Academy. Professor Dr. Delwar Hossain also addressed the freshers, providing valuable guidelines for their academic future and emphasizing the necessity of studying IR in the changing global landscape.

Assistant Professor M. Ali Siddiquee, Student Adviser and Batch Coordinator, introduced the department's rich intellectual history, its legacy, and the BSS (Honours) academic program. Assistant Professor Monzima Haque, Student Adviser, presented the various academic and non-academic facilities offered by the department and the university. Other faculty members who addressed the freshers included Professor Dr. Md. Abdul Mannan and Assistant Professor Lamea Momen. Professor Dr. Niloy Ranjan Biswas offered the vote of thanks.

Members of the DUIR Cultural Club, Volunteers’ Club, Photography Club, Japanese Club, Debating Club, and Latin American Language and Cultural Club staged performances for the freshers. The event was moderated by Master’s student S. M. Arif Mahtab Hridoy and 4th-year BSS (Hons.) student Afia Ibnat Shuchi.

The Department of International Relations, University of Dhaka, recently hosted a seminar titled "The Rohingya Crisis: Its Ramifications and the Search for Durable Solutions" in collaboration with OCPASS, CGS, and the Faculty of Social Sciences.

The session re-evaluated the crisis not merely as a humanitarian issue, but as a "perennial" security challenge and a militarized social problem rooted in Myanmar’s complex strategic culture.

Panelists Mr. Min Zin, Mr. Javiet Ealom (SG, Rohingya Consultative Council), and Ms. Lilianne Fan (Head of Secretariat, Malaysian Advisory Group on Myanmar) emphasized that sustainable solutions depend on addressing Myanmar’s internal power shifts and restoring Rohingya political agency.

Discussions highlighted the "Naypyitology" of the military regime, the territorial dominance of the Arakan Army, and the necessity of inclusive regional diplomacy through ASEAN.

The Department of International Relations at the University of Dhaka (DUIR), in collaboration with the BIMSTEC Secretariat, successfully hosted a joint seminar titled "Bridging Regions, Building Futures: BIMSTEC Under the Spotlight" at the Professor Muzaffar Ahmed Chowdhury Auditorium, on 31 March 2026.

The event featured H.E. Ambassador Indra Mani Pandey, Secretary General of BIMSTEC, who delivered a keynote address on the organization’s history and sectors of cooperation. Professor Dr. Taiabur Rahman, Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences, attended as the Special Guest. Dr. Md. Nazrul Islam, Secretary (East & West) of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, honored the event as Chief Guest. Professor Dr. Mamun Ahmed, Chairman of the University Grants Commission of Bangladesh also attended the seminar.

About 200 participants attended the seminar, which brought together professionals and students to discuss strategies for regional integration. Key discussions focused on multilateral connectivity, free trade and transport facilitation. It also included energy cooperation, climate resilience and disaster management. Bangladesh’s leadership role and the need to address non-traditional security challenges such as irregular migration and transnational organized crime were also a part of discussion.

"International law is not an abstract concept—it is essential."
The Department of International Relations, University of Dhaka, was honored to host Mr. Mitchel Lee, Chargé d’Affaires of the High Commission of the Republic of Singapore in Dhaka, for an insightful special lecture on "Singapore’s Experience and Role in International Law."

In a world often dominated by the "might is right" narrative, Mr. Lee highlighted how international law serves as both a "shield and a sword" for small and trade-dependent states like Singapore and Bangladesh. From the "Constitution of the Oceans" (UNCLOS) to the complexities of Transboundary Haze and Global Trade Law, the session provided our students with a masterclass on how legal frameworks protect sovereignty and foster economic prosperity.

We extend our sincere gratitude to Mr. Lee for sharing his practitioner’s perspective and to our Chairperson, Professor Dr. ASM Ali Ashraf, for presiding over this enriching academic exchange.

Singapore and Bangladesh may be geographically distant, but our shared commitment to a rules-based international order continues to bridge the gap!

ঢাকা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় আন্তর্জাতিক সম্পর্ক বিভাগের বিভিন্ন পরীক্ষায় অসাধারণ ফলাফলের জন্য ২৪ জন মেধাবী শিক্ষার্থীকে ‘চেয়ার’স অ্যাওয়ার্ড’ প্রদান করা হয়েছে। এরমধ্যে ১৩তম ও ১৪তম ব্যাচের বিএসএস (সম্মান) ও মাস্টার্স পরীক্ষায় কৃতিত্বপূর্ণ ফলাফলের জন্য ১৭ জনকে এবং পিএমআইআর পরীক্ষায় অসাধারণ ফলাফলের জন্য ৭জনকে এই অ্যাওয়ার্ড প্রদান করা হয়।
