Bhawal National Park is one of the major protected areas (PA) of Bangladesh, located in Gazipur District near Dhaka. It is primarily characterized by tropical moist deciduous forest, dominated by Sal (Shorea robusta) trees, which constitute a significant component of the regionโ€™s natural vegetation.

On 18 April 2026, the 42nd batch (เฆฌเฆฟเฆธเงเฆฎเงŸ เงชเงจ) of the Department of Environmental Science and Disaster Management (ESDM) conducted a field visit to Bhawal National Park as part of their course ESDM 205: Forest and Wildlife Management. The primary objective of this visit was to enhance studentsโ€™ understanding of ecological components and the functioning of ecosystem services within a forest environment.

The students were divided into five groupsโ€”Beel Dakatia, Naf Estuary, Hakaluki Haor, Bogakine Lake, and Arial Beelโ€”each comprising members assigned to seven distinct tasks during the fieldwork. These tasks included:

1. Regulating Ecosystem Services
2. Provisioning Ecosystem Services
3. Cultural Ecosystem Services
4. Avifauna Identification
5. Fauna Identification
6. Floral Distribution
7. Waste Identification

The core activities involved surveying ecosystem services present in the forest and assessing species distribution across selected areas. The students conducted their observations within the buffer and intermediate zones, ensuring minimal disturbance to wildlife and maintaining ecological integrity.

To identify unknown species, the students utilized four AI-based applicationsโ€”BirdNET, Merlin, iNaturalist, and PlantNetโ€”which enabled species recognition through images and acoustic signals. Through hands-on practice, the students developed practical skills in applying digital tools for biodiversity assessment in natural settings.

From a forest management perspective, these task-based activities provided valuable insights into sustainable resource use, biodiversity conservation, and ecosystem monitoring. The assessment of regulating, provisioning, and cultural ecosystem services highlighted the multifaceted benefits forests provide, while species identification and floral distribution studies contributed to understanding habitat structure and ecological balance. Additionally, waste identification emphasized the impact of anthropogenic pressures and the importance of maintaining cleanliness and minimizing human-induced disturbances within protected areas.

Overall, the field assessment allowed students to recognize the significance of floral and faunal diversity and to understand how ecosystem services and human activities influence forest ecosystems. This practical exposure strengthened their comprehension of adaptive forest management strategies aimed at conserving biodiversity while ensuring the sustainable use of natural resources.
