Department of Industrial & Production Engineering - IPE, BUET

Department of Industrial & Production Engineering - IPE, BUET Industrial & Production Engineering is a branch of engineering which deals with manufacturing techno

Industrial & Production Engineering (IPE) is concerned with the development, improvement, implementation of integrated systems of people, money, knowledge, information, equipment, energy, materials, analysis and synthesis, as well as the mathematical, physical and social sciences together with the principles and methods of engineering design to specify, predict, and evaluate the results to be obta

ined from such systems or processes. While IPE is a traditional and longstanding engineering discipline subject to professional engineering licensure, its underlying concepts overlap considerably with certain business-oriented disciplines such as operations management. Industrial & Production Engineers (IPEs) use their knowledge and skills to improve systematic processes through the use of statistical analysis, interpersonal communication, design, planning, quality control, operations management, computer simulation and problem solving. Areas that IPEs can contribute:

Operations Research, also known as Management Science: Discipline that deals with the application of advanced analytical methods to help make better decisions. Operations Management: An area of management concerned with overseeing, designing and controlling the process of production and redesigning business operations in the production of goods or services. Project Management: Is the process and activity of planning, organizing, motivating, and controlling resources, procedures and protocols to achieve specific goals in scientific or daily problems. Job Design: The specification of contents, methods and relationship of jobs in order to satisfy technological and organizational requirements as well as the social and personal requirements of the job holder. Financial Engineering: The application of technical methods, especially from mathematical finance and computational finance, in the practice of finance. Management Engineering: A specialized form of management that is concerned with the application of engineering principles to business practice. Supply Chain Management: The management of the flow of goods. It includes the movement and storage of raw materials, work-in-process inventory, and finished goods from point of origin to point of consumption. Process Engineering: Design, operation, control, and optimization of chemical, physical, and biological processes. Systems Engineering: An interdisciplinary field of engineering that focuses on how to design and manage complex engineering systems over their life cycles. Ergonomics: The practice of designing products, systems or processes to take proper account of the interaction between them and the people that use them. Safety Engineering: An engineering discipline which assures that engineered systems provide acceptable levels of safety. Cost Engineering: Practice devoted to the management of project cost, involving such activities as cost- and control- estimating, which is cost control and cost forecasting, investment appraisal, and risk analysis. Value Engineering: a systematic method to improve the "value" of goods or products and services by using an examination of function. Quality Engineering: A way of preventing mistakes or defects in manufactured products and avoiding problems when delivering solutions or services to customers. Industrial Plant Configuration: Sizing of necessary infrastructure used in support and maintenance of a given facility. Facility Management: An interdisciplinary field devoted to the coordination of space, infrastructure, people and organization. Engineering Design Process: Formulation of a plan to help an engineer build a product with a specified performance goal. Logistics: The management of the flow of goods between the point of origin and the point of consumption in order to meet some requirements of customers or corporations. As Systems Integrators, IPEs can analyze and design facilities (buildings, rooms, equipment, infrastructures, etc.), material handling systems, manufacturing and production systems, information systems and individual and group workplaces. In the Operations realm, IPEs analyze, design and manage manufacturing and service processes, production systems planning and control, resource allocation and scheduling, personnel assignment and scheduling, quality assurance, inventory control and system and personnel safety. Congrats to the students who have made it to BUET as well as IPE. One fact is - nobody in IPE has to worry about good job as well as good career, unless one loses one’s way and confidence. Yes, it may happen that you may not land your dream job at your dream company; but that won’t stop you to get alternative job opportunities where you can develop yourself with available skill sets. You will be surprised of your range of capability at any industry/company compare to any other Engineering disciplines.

The fact that the subjects and study pattern in University are completely different than the ones prior to university and not being prepared for it- may give you the impression that suddenly you are not one of the best students you used to be, rather an average one. You have to prepare and adjust your own study pattern as soon as possible and find your own way to master each course. And that’s only on you.

It’s really appreciable that ex-graduates and senior students have prepared some form of overviews of the courses for the newcomers. It will at least give some ideas about the courses. I am not sure how it is now, but from my experience, be careful about Mechanical Drawing; for some it may seem natural but for many it will be a shock if you are not prepared from day 1. Don’t expect anything from the teacher. In general, there’s very less time to explain and you won’t have enough time to grasp all the concepts during lesson. So, get the necessary ideas and if possible some practices prior to the very first lesson.

Our course curriculum is very rich and versatile. At the same time, considering only few months to grasp, to practice and to master what is necessary, each subject is quite vast and complicated. But not to worry, everyone finds a way. By the way, during our time “Chotha”- made our life much easier. We were very much dependent on few of our classmates for their nicely prepared chotha. And they always shared without any reservation.

Please don’t burden yourself with the expectation of high CGPA, unless you want to be a teacher. That means if you do get high CGPA, it’s really great; but if not, then no reason to worry or feel down because of that. Finishing IPE in time is itself an achievement and whatever your CGPA is, you will land your job appropriate for yourself. And then your career will depend on your development and excellence on necessary personal and professional skill sets.

The true essence of BUET is the time one spends here- not only to study, but also to develop oneself. Make good use of any opportunity to make yourself better. Master necessary productivity apps, be very good in MS excel, be very good in English as well as presentation. If possible learn one more language beside English. Being a multilingual is such a plus point for any career now-a-days. By the way, if you want to study abroad, keep in mind you will need GRE. If you start preparing little by little from the very beginning, it will be much easier for you. I guess the recent graduates can advise better in this regard.

One thing, apart from having excellent educational background and technical know-how, there are some common skills that every IPE professional should develop. For example- communication and presentation skills, teamwork and cooperation skills, adjusting to the work environment, management of your own time and tasks, ability to handle pressure and deadlines, problem solving ability and so on. To develop these skills you have to be active in social life, break all your barriers, challenge yourself with adventures and new responsibilities and always try to improve yourself. When you will start your professional life, you will see these are not just some statements for good CV but very important to do your everyday work. These skills improve the quality of your personal life too.

Now these aside, another part of BUET life is the freedom of using your time in so many interesting ways. Reading books, I mean a lot of books, (beside study materials of course), great selection of movies, tv series, songs and music, computer games, learning table tennis, travelling, spending sleepless nights with adda, debates and discussions, playing cards and to go out to eat at Chankhar pool, Palashi bazaar, Puran Dhaka or Thataribazaar. If you have a hobby, passion or extracurricular skill, flourish it fully and if you can, add few more new things to the list. Enjoy your time in BUET to the fullest.

I hope everybody understands after so many hurdles and stiff competition that it’s a privilege to get the opportunity to be part of this institution- not only to be proud of but also to be humble and thankful. Please always remember: it doesn’t matter what department, which batch you are from, you all share the same identity- you all are from BUET. There can be differences in opinions, beliefs, perspectives and in anything; but at the end of the day you all are there to have the time of your life. So create memories that you can hold, share and be proud of for the rest of your life.

I always cherish my life in BUET because of the atmosphere we lived in. You don’t have to be even a friend with a batch-mate to have some memorable time; you feel welcome to be free and frank with completely unknown Senior Buetian from the very first day, just because he is your hall-mate or your classmates’ floor-mate. You will feel so special and lucky just for being there. Mutual respects and cordial, sincere atmosphere –please always try to keep these at your BUET.

Wish you all the very best. Take care.

Let's hear from Ben Zaman, an alumnus from our department who's working in Rich Products Corp located in Chicago, IL, USA. His previous job experience includes BATB and EY. Hope his perspectives will help you see things from a different angle.

"For any newcomers - selecting a dept. in just happens to be one of the very important decision of his or her life. What is the Course curriculum and How much prospect does this engineering have (professional and academic) are the two question that tends to puzzle everyone. It happened to me. This write up answers one of those - "Why IPE is unique" question. I believe its -"The million-dollar question" that needs to be answered first before going into too much details.

IPE/IE/ISE is essential for any system, process, equipment/assets, assembly line to perform EFFECTIVELY and in an OPTIMIZED way, regardless the sector. Japanese engineers like Taichii Ohno and Shigeo Shingo understood its importance almost 70 years back (post WWII) when they discovered concepts of Toyota Production System (TPS) and Lean Manufacturing. These gentlemen were both Industrial Engineers! In the next 70 years, several philosophies have been derived from TPS and Lean – such as TPM and TQM which are still being used today in various forms (such as IWS – Integrated Work Systems, Integrated Line/Six Sigma-IL/6S) in various sectors such as FMCG, Diversified Industrial Products, Retails, Consulting Services, Automobiles, Power & Utilities and many more (in fact all of the sectors that you can think of). Tools, methodologies and concepts derived from these philosophies help a company “design and change how things are done to increase quality, safety and productivity”.

Secondly, IPE is an application-based engineering that also focuses on computer aided manufacturing (CAM), computer integrated manufacturing (CIM), Computer Aided Designs (CAD) and Systems Engineering. Why these are important? Because they are the building blocks for 21st century concepts such as Industry 4.0, Internet of Things (IoT), 3D Printing, Data Analytics and Simulation. Trust me – become knowledgeable on one of these things and you don’t have to look for jobs rather the jobs will look for you.
Thirdly, In the field of New Production Introduction (NPI) or New Product Development (NPD) concepts of product life cycle designing, aspects of product usability, ergonomics of design, reliability modeling are being used by Engineers everywhere and I mean everywhere. Starting from your mobile phones to the rockets that goes into space. Surprisingly, it is a new field that the Industrial Engineers have recently started to take notice of and establishing themselves. Don’t believe me – just type in Apple Industrial Engineering Jobs and see the results for starters. By the way do you know the Apple’s CEO Tim Cook is an Industrial Engineer Graduate?

Let us dig in more. One of the many hassles that companies face these days is related to its “Supply Chain & Logistics”. Industrial Engineering provides theoretical as well as analytical tools & methods from Operations Research, Operations Managements and Supply Chain Management – which will allow to apply readily to make improvements. Usually freshers and in some cases experienced hires join a company and learn these things through experience. But an IPE graduate knows these things from the get-go. Several certifications courses everywhere are being offered that includes such as Lean Six Sigma, Project Management, CSCP, CSCM, CPIM and many more. But do you know why they are offered and why everyone is taking them? It’s because there is a huge demand for this, and the knowledge gap is somewhat evident.

But my dear fellow newcomers – if you are envisioning to become an Industrial Engineering Graduate – you will be equipped with the right skill sets and knowledges from the get-go, which for some, takes years to gather, learn and understand. You sit down with dept. managers or work stream leads – you will be able to pick up their language and objectives in such quick time that it will surprise them. That is “The most unique thing about Industrial Engineering”. They will say – well you know this already, how? To which you would reply – I am an Industrial Engineering graduate.

Again congratulations to everyone ! Best wishes to you all for a great upcoming journey with BUET.

দ্বিতীয়ত,IPE হলো একটি application-based engineering যা Computer Aided Manufacturing (CAM), Computer Integrated Manufacturing (CIM), Computer Aided Design (CAD) এবং Systems Engineering এর দিকেও যথেষ্ট মনোযোগ দেয়।
তৃতীয়ত, বর্তমানে New Production Introduction (NPI) বা New Product Development (NPD) এর মতো product life cycle designing এর ফিল্ডগুলোতে Product usability, ergonomics of design, reliability modeling এর জ্ঞান ইন্জিনিয়ারদের দ্বারা সর্বত্র ও সর্বদা ব্যবহৃত হচ্ছে।

Sincerely
Ben Zaman

Review from a junior most member of our family. Hope this will come handy specially for the newcomers :

The first and foremost question that comes in a student’s mind after hearing the name IPE is, “WHAT IS I.P.E.!!” Well, the definition that I understand is: “I.P.E is a branch of engineering that uses the concepts of Science and Mathematics to materialize highest utilization of resources through optimization.” To illustrate,” I.P.E. is a branch of engineering that concerns the development, improvement, implementation and evaluation of integrated systems of people, money, knowledge, information, equipment, energy, material and process” (Wikipedia). And to do so one I.P.E. engineer needs to study various topics of mathematics and engineering like Programming, Design, Manufacturing Processes, Numerical Analysis, Supply Chain Management, Operations Research, Quality Management etc.
Now, you can divide the subjects of I.P.E. in two major sections. One is Industrial Engineering and one is Production engineering/Manufacturing Engineering.
From the word manufacture you are supposed to know what it teaches. It teaches you how to make a thing, how to manufacture a product. And in this section, you learn about Manufacturing processes, Materials Science, Product Design, Computer Aided Design (CAD), some deep concepts of Physical science like: Thermodynamics, Heat transfer, Fluid mechanics and so on. All these stuffs are all about mathematics applied to describe the physical movement, which builds the core of mechanical engineering.
Now, let’s come to the section of Industrial Engineering, which has created a misconception about I.P.E. Few people asked me, “Is I.P.E. really a subject of engineering or does this subject relates to commerce?” In short, the answer is obviously this is a subject of engineering. How can I say that? Because The core of Industrial Engineering is optimization techniques. To have a firm grasp, it’s important that you understand different algorithms. You get to learn many deep staffs of Applied Math and you may work on the interface of machine learning along with optimization theory and use them in interesting applications like computer vision, autonomous car manufacturing, data analytics to name a few. The courses like Numerical Analysis, Operations Research, Statistics and Probability are some of the courses which are fundamental parts of Applied Mathematics. Now you may wonder about the names of few courses which include the word “Management” in them!! Let me clarify this to you. If you have done a little study over the subject I.P.E then, you will get to know that Supply Chain Management (SCM) is one of the major management courses of I.P.E. But do you know that to study SCM specially in an engineering school like ours, you must know graph theory, probability, mathematical modelling, statistics and more advanced stuffs of mathematics, though the course name includes the word “Management” in it? You would love Industrial Engineering (IE) if you like Probability, Statistics and Linear Algebra because these subjects form the base for the study of IE. Therefore, the point of this subject being related to commerce, is baseless and vouge.
If you are interested is research for your future studies then you can have your Ph.D. in Operations Research, Combinatorics and Optimization, Bioinformatics, Computational science and Engineering, Data Analytics, Machine Leaning and so on. And if you are interested in corporate job, then your IPE could be your ultimate choice since this is the subject which prepares you with hardcore engineering and scientific management knowledge. This keeps you few steps ahead compared to that of most other disciplines. However, your self-development depends on you and you must create your own path. Hope this write up helped you and guided you towards that path.
