Govt. Rajendra College, Faridpur National University College The then municipality authority and the government handed over in total 5.55 acres of land to the college. In 1995 H.S.C.

The students of Faridpur greatly felt the absence of a higher educational institution in the district, where there were a number of good schools for secondary education, sans even an intermediate college during the early twentieth century. A distinguished personality Babu Ambikacharan Majumder, a veteran All India Congress leader, renowned lawyer, and philanthropist who had a vision of educating t

he commoners with higher education came forward to lead this endeavour. He and the elites of the town, after several discussions and meetings at different levels, came to a resolution of establishing a college for higher education in Faridpur district town. In this regard, Mr Majumder with all out effort banded many educationists and social workers to translate the dream of establishing a college in the district town into reality. At that very moment, they had to face resource constraints though the business community of the town raised an amount of forty thousand taka for the college. Mr Majumder, at that moment of fund crisis, sought financial help from the Zaminder of Baishrashi Mr Ramesh Chandra Chowdhury and the latter agreed to donate fifty thousand taka on condition of naming the new institution after the name of his father the late Rajendra Chandra Chowdhury. On July 10, 1918 the college embarked on its journey. The activities of the college formally started on July 10, 1918 with only 29 students. Honours courses were introduced in a few subjects like English, Philosophy and Mathematics in 1923. The sincere effort of the principal and cooperation of the governing body played a significant role in this regard. After the partition of the country in 1947 the University of Dhaka took the decision to withdraw Honours course from peripheral zones and consequently the same courses were put on hold in 1949. Once both the academic and administrative activities of the college were concentrated on the town campus. Presently the activities of the college are being run on two campuses - the town campus and the Baitul Aman campus. The construction of the buildings on the Baitul Aman campus was completed in 1968. But the buildings lay unused for more than a decade due to some obvious reasons. During 1978-79 construction of new buildings started in this campus and old ones underwent renovation. In 1984 the classes of 6 honours subjects and degree (Pass) were shifted to Baitul Aman campus. courses were suspended and the classes of degree (Pass) were shifted to the town campus. It is worthwhile to mention that honours courses in six disciplines started during 1971-72. With the passage of time honours courses and Master's degree courses are being taught in a total of 16 subjects. Apart from this, arrangement has also been made to appear at Master's examination as private examinees. Another noticeable phenomenon is that higher secondary courses were reintroduced in 2008. At present the administrative building is located on the town campus. All the activities of higher secondary, degree (Pass) and some practical classes of science faculty are conducted in this campus. Aside from academic activities, the role of this college in sports and other social service-oriented activities is also brilliant. The college was adjudged as the best college under Dhaka division in 1988. The college is contributing immensely towards intellectual enrichment of the student community. Its contribution in building up a knowledge-based and ideal society will have to be evaluated from a broader perspective.
