This year, 14 students of GEB CU went abroad in 15 different reputed universities for higher studies and secured prestigious scholarships including Commonwealth, Erasmus Mundus, SI scholarship. We are proud of them.

Congratulations to Dr. A M Masudul Azad Chowdhury, Professor, Dept. of Genetic Engineering & Biotechnology, CU for winning the Best research article award 2024 from Research & Publication Cell, University of Chittagong. His research article on detection of salmonella and anti-microbial resistance in drinking water got this recognition. A very well deserved award. This shows the quality and impact of the ongoing research activities of GEB,CU. Dr Azad is an expert in the field of microbial and cancer genomics. He has been working on tracking AMR in drinking water and environmental sample for last 12 years. Well done GEB’ans!

Congratulations to Mohammad Al-Baruni Chowdhury a junior researcher and recent thesis student of Dept. of Genetic Engineering & Biotechnology, University of Chittagong for being Champion (oral presentation) in the International Biotechnology Conference 2025 organized by Brac University. This is his 3rd award for thesis. Baruni previously became champion in NYBB National Biotechnology thesis presentation competition'2024 and Professor Jamal Nazrul Islam best thesis award 2025. Well done Baruni! He worked on Autism. His thesis was supervised by Professor Dr. Lolo Wal Marzan. Thank you Dr. Marzan and Baruni for bringing it to home and keeping us the consistent glory of GEB,CU.

Department of Genetic Engineering & Biotechnology, University of Chittagong is proud to see a historical and record braking result ever in Chittagong University secured by their students. Fariha Ahmed Raisa and Tahia Akter Tanmi secured CGPA 4 out of 4 in bachelors which is a record in the history of CU. Well done Fariha and Tahia. Proud of you! You proved again that GEB is the house of champions.

Best research department! Another success story of the department of Genetic Engineering & Biotechnology, University of Chittagong. Recently GEB,CU won "Jamal Nazrul Islam Research Excellence Award- 2023-24" for being one of the top 3 departments of Chittagong University for research activities. 74 scopus indexed research article of the teachers, researchers and students of the Department of Genetic Engineering & Biotechnology was published in 2023-24 and 42 research projects have been completed. Teachers won more than 40 local, national and international research grants. Moreover, two teachers of the department achieved individual excellence award. Afroza Akter Tanni was awarded"Best Female Researcher" of the University of Chittagong. Mohabbat Hossain won "Best Emerging Researcher Award" (for publishing highest number of indexed journals and first author paper in 2023-2024 among the lecturers and assistant professors). 4 other students got best thesis award- Mohammad Al-Beruni, Anjashu Paul, Anonya Dey and Jannatul Ferdous. This award was announced in the recent Chattogram Research and Innovation Festival 2025 organized by Jamal Nazrul Islam Centre for Mathematical and Physical Research. Congratulations to the teachers and students of the department. Many more to come.

2024 was another successful year for the Dept. of Genetic Engineering & Biotechnology, University of Chittagong. This department ended up the year with 39 international peer reviewed and scopus indexed publications, 21 local and international research grants, 10 Prestigious scholarships, 85% employment rate of recent graduates and placement of alumni in topnotch organizations of world.

Congratulations to Mohammad Al Baruni, a recent graduate of department of Genetic Engineering & Biotechnology, University of Chittagong for being National Champion in the final round of National Biotechnology Thesis Presentation Contest - 2024. The final round of the competition took place on December 20, 2024, Friday, at the Central Kochi Kacha Auditorium in Dhaka. It is noteworthy that earlier, students from 27 universities in Bangladesh showcased their master's thesis research on biotechnology in the preliminary round. From there, the top seven contestants were selected to present their thesis in the final round. These contestants presented their research on the use of biotechnology in cancer diagnosis, autism detection, waste management, mosquito control, dye production in factories, diarrhoea, food contamination, and food security. The finalists were from Khulna University, University of Dhaka, University of Chittagong, Sylhet Agricultural University, Jahangirnagar University, Jashore University of Science and Technology, and BRAC University. Mohammad Al Baruni of the Department of Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology of the University of Chittagong became the champion by presenting a thesis on using genetic engineering for autism diagnosis. His thesis was supervised by Professor Dr. Lolo Wal Marzan. We are proud of Baruni.
