Huge congratulations to Md. Rifat Mahmud, a graduate from the 2K18 batch, for bringing international honors!
Rifat has received a prestigious “Special Mention” in the Bachelor’s Thesis category at the International Architecture & Design Thesis Award (UnIATA ’26): "The Global Benchmark for Graduation Excellence.” Evaluated by a distinguished international jury of architects and academics, his project achieved the 2nd highest score among 146 shortlisted entries from around the world!
His undergraduate thesis, “Crisis to Conservation: A Water Research & Awareness Centre for Sustainable Water Management in Bangladesh,” focuses on the highly vulnerable southwestern region of Bangladesh, particularly Khulna, which faces severe challenges related to salinity, pollution, and groundwater stress.
Rifat designed a regional prototype that envisions architecture as a living water system. By integrating rainwater harvesting, greywater recycling, constructed wetlands, and Managed Aquifer Recharge (MAR) into the spatial experience, the project transforms the built environment into an active hub for research, policy, and community learning.

The Department of Architecture, KUET has successfully completed the Final Jury session for Design Studio IX (BATCH 2k20).
Addressing the challenges of rapid urbanization, land scarcity, and climate response in Bangladesh, our senior batch presented comprehensive architectural solutions that reimagine high-density vertical living beyond the conventional "apartment box".

Objectives:
▫️Application of building code regulations, including precise calculations of Floor Area Ratio (FAR), Maximum Ground Coverage (MGC), Means of Escape (MOS), setbacks, and life safety provisions.
▫️Navigating contrasting urban conditions—dense metropolitan plots under RAJUK in Dhaka versus deltaic, riverine environments under KDA in Khulna
▫️Enhancing thermal comfort, daylighting, and natural ventilation tailored to the tropical monsoon environment
▫️Developing complete working-drawing packages and formal submission sheets for regulatory authorities

Department of Architecture, KUET is delighted to present “BREATHING HEIGHTS: Dwelling, Density & Vertical Monsoon”, the Design Studio IX jury.

The studio explores the evolving challenges of high-density urban dwelling, investigating how vertical living can respond meaningfully to our tropical monsoon climate. Through thoughtful considerations of density, environment, community, and spatial experience, the studio encourages students to rethink vertical habitation beyond conventional high-rise solutions.

This publication is presented by অতন্দ্র'২৩, the 8th batch of the Department of Architecture,
Khulna University of Engineering & Technology (KUET), as part of the Photography course in
2nd Year 1st Semester. Driven by enthusiasm, curiosity, and a shared passion for architectural
heritage, we undertook the task of documenting significant sites from the pre-colonial and
colonial periods of Bangladesh through photography and research.
This publication reflects our collective effort to explore, appreciate, and visually preserve the
rich historical and architectural legacy of the nation.
