The Human Measure — Anthropometry and Ergonomics in Architectural Design

Architecture is fundamentally about designing for people.Throughout this project, students explore how human dimensions, movement, capabilities, and physical limitations shape functional and inclusive spatial environments. Moving beyond the misconception of an "average person," the assignment bridges global reference standards with real contextual body measurements and universal accessibility requirements.

Project Focus & Lenses:

▪️Global Standards: Reference-based anthropometric data from standard architectural literature.

▪️Contextual Reality: Primary measurement data collected directly from actual users.

▪️Inclusive Needs: Spatial requirements, clearances, and turning radii for wheelchair and ambulant-disabled users.

Across seven functional space allocations—ranging from living, dining, and workspace layouts to vertical/horizontal circulation—students develop comparative analytical drawings to create environments where comfort, safety, and human dignity come first.

FROM IMAGE TO PIXELS
The Department of Architecture, KUET is pleased to present "From Image to Pixels," project executed by our First-Year students (Batch 2K25) under Design Studio I (Term I).In this exercise, students explored the structural power of the grid as a foundational tool for formal organization and spatial mapping. The students deconstructed continuous images into discrete, modular units of black, white, and intermediate gray values.
Objectives:
• Exploring the matrix as a tool for formal organization.
• Translating organic human form into a rigid digital and graphic language.
• Developing a keen sensitivity to grids, contrast, and visual hierarchy
• Translating three dimensional depth, light, and shadow into a controlled two-dimensional graphic language.

As part of our Studio IX coursework, students of the Department of Architecture, KUET (Batch '20), had the valuable opportunity to visit 4Walls. The session offered practical insights into BNBC (Bangladesh National Building Code) compliance and apartment design considerations, deepening our understanding of how regulatory frameworks shape real-world residential architecture.
We are grateful to Ar. Ahmed Imtiaz Khan Sir, Ar. M. Wahid Asif Sir, Ar. Sudipto Majumder Sir organizing and guiding this enriching learning experience. We are also grateful to our seniors, Sabah Kabir Reetu Apu and Dutithi Rahman Apu, for helping us to organize this coursework.
