Literary Terms
01. Allegory (রূপক কাহিনি): An allegory is a story of double meaning. In it, one story is told in the guise of another story.
02. Allusion (পরোক্ষ উল্লেখ): An implicit or indirect reference to another word of literature, a historical or mythical person or event.
03. Irony (প্রশংসার ছলে নিন্দা: বিদ্রূপ): A statement or a situation or an action which actually means the opposite of its surface meaning.
04. Paradox (স্ববিরোধী কথা): Paradox is a self-contradictory statement.
05. Alliteration (অনুপ্রাস): The repetition of beginning consonant sound.
06. Assonance (স্বরসাদৃশ্য): Repetition of a vowel sound in nearby words.
07. Aside (জনাস্তিক): A dramatic technique of speaking along with the presence of other characters on the stage.
08. Soliloquy (স্বগতোক্তি: Soliloquy is a dramatic technique of speaking alone on stage. (Aside ও Soliloquy-এর মাঝে মূল পার্থক্য হলো- Aside-এর ক্ষেত্রে স্টেইজে উপস্থিত অন্যান্য চরিত্রগুলোর সামনে একজন নিজে নিজে কথা বলে; কিন্তু Soliloquy এর ক্ষেত্রে স্টেইজে আর কেউ থাকে না, শুধু একজন নিজে নিজে কথা বলে।)
09.Epilogue (নাটকের শেষ বক্তব্য): A speech at the end of a play.
10. Prologue (নাটক বা উপন্যাসের প্রারম্ভিক অংশ): The beginning part of a play or a novel.
11. Preamble (প্রস্তাবনা): An introductory statement, especially, the introductory part of a constitution or statute that usually states the reasons for and intent of the law.
12. Climax (চরম পরিণতি; চূড়ান্তসীমা): The climax of a plot is what happens at the height.
13. Anti-climax (আকস্মিকভাবে চূড়ান্ত মুহূর্ত থেকে হাস্যকর মুহূর্তে পতন): Anti- climax is a statement in which there is a sudden fall from the serious to the trivial or from the sublime to the ridiculous.
14. Catastrophe (বিপর্যয়): The tragic end of dramatic events.
15. Biography (জীবনী): One's life story written by another person.
16. Auto-biography (আত্মজীবনী): One's life story written by oneself.
17. Memoirs (স্মৃতিকথা): A book or other piece of writing based on the writer's personal experience.
18. Brochure (পুস্তিকা): A type of small magazine that contains pictures and information on a product or a company.
19. Pamphlet (ক্ষুদ্র পুস্তিকা): A thin book with only a few pages that gives information or an opinion about something.
20.Anthology (সাহিত্য সংকলন): A collection of selected poems or other pieces of writing.
21. Chorus (গায়কদল/সমবেত সঙ্গীত): A body of singers who perform together as a group.
22. Dialect (উপভাষা): The language of a particular district, class or a group of people.
23. Limerick (কৌতুকপূর্ণ পঞ্চপদী ছড়া বা ছোট বর্ণনামূলক কবিতা):
1) Limerick is a funny poem of five lines.
2) A kind of short narrative poem.
24. Syntax (পদবিন্যাস বা পদক্রম): In English grammar, syntax deals with formation of sentences.
25. Simile (উপমা): The explicit comparison of unlike things using the words "like" or "as" is known to be simile. [দুটি জিনিসের মধ্যে সরাসরি তুলনা করতে 'Simile' ব্যবহৃত হয়। এক্ষেত্রে সরাসরি তুলনা বোঝাতে সাধারণত "like" or "as" ব্যবহৃত হয়।।Example:
Rafi is like the moon.
Rafi is as busy as a bee.
26. Metaphor (রূপালঙ্কার বা রূপক): An implicit comparison between two different things. [দুটি জিনিসের মধ্যে পরোক্ষ তুলনা করতে 'Metaphor' ব্যবহৃত হয়। এক্ষেত্রে পরোক্ষ তুলনা বোঝাতে "like" or "as" ব্যবহৃত হয় না।।
Example:
Rahi is the moon.
Lima is a rose.
27. Euphemism (সুভাষণ): Euphemism is an inoffensive expression.
28. Eulogy (অতিশয় প্রশংসা): A speech or piece of writing that praises someone or something very much.
29. Hyperbole (অতিরঞ্জন): An exaggerated statement or an extreme overstatement.
30. Hymn (ঈশ্বরবন্দনামূলক গান): A lyric poem or song in praise of God or a deity or a hero.
31. Lyric (গীতিকবিতা): A short poem expressing personal or subjective thoughts and intense feelings of single speaking.
32. Ballad (গাথা): A short narrative poem that tells a grave story through dialogue and action; especially in a sentimental or a romantic poem.
33. Ode (গাথা কবিতা বিশেষ): An exalted (মহিমান্বিত) lyric poem that begins with an address to someone, instill anguish and ends with consolation.
34. Elegy (শোকগাথা): 1) Elegy is a song or a poem of lamentation. (কারো মৃত্যুতে বিলাপ করা)।
2) A song of mourning.
35. Dirge (সমাধিসৌধে বিলাপ): Dirge is a song expressing grief, lamentation and mourning. (কোনো ব্যক্তির সমাধিসৌধে বিলাপ করা)।
36. Epitaph (সমাধিলিপি): Inscription on a tomb or a monument.
37. Epic (মহাকাব্য): Epic is a long narrative poem composed on a grand scale and is exalted style.
38. Canto (দীর্ঘ কবিতার সর্গ): A part of along poem.
39. Stanza (স্তবক; কবিকার পংক্তিগুচ্ছ): A division of a poem. It is a smaller unit of the structure of a poem. (Canto থেকে Stanza ছোট)
40. Act (নাটকের সর্গ বা অঙ্ক): The major division of a drama.
41. Novelette (উপন্যাসিকা; ছোট উপন্যাস): Novelette is a short form of a novel. It is longer than a short story but shorter than a novel.
42. Melodrama (আবেগপূর্ণ ও উত্তেজনাপূর্ণ নাটক): Melodrama is a kind of play of violent (হিংস্র) and sensational (উত্তেজনাপূর্ণ) themes. Basically, melodrama is a highly sensational drama with happy ending.
43. Monodrama (একক চরিত্র বিশিষ্ট নাটক): A drama acted or designed to be acted by a single person.
44. Monologue (নাটকে স্বগতোক্তি): A part of a drama in which a single actor speaks alone.
Dramatic Monologue (কবিতায় নাটকীয় স্বগতোক্তি। যেমন- কবি জসীম উদ্দীনের 'কবর' কবিতা।): A kind of lyric poem in which a single speaker expresses his thoughts and feelings to a silent listener. (মনে রাখতে হবে, Dramatic Monologue কিন্তু Drama-তে ব্যবহৃত হয় না, poem-এ ব্যবহৃত হয়। আবার শুধু Monologue Drama-তে ব্যবহৃত হয়।)
45. Sonnet (চতুর্দশপদী কবিতা): A poem of fourteen lines.
46. Protagonist (নাটকের প্রধান চরিত্র): The leading character of actors in a play.
47. Hamartia (কেন্দ্রীয় চরিত্রের ত্রুটি): An error or a flaw in the character of the protagonist of a tragedy.
48. Rhyme (ছড়া): The sound pattern made by the rise and fall of the unstressed and stressed syllables in verse line or speech.
Example: Light, fight, bight.
49. Couplet (অন্ত্যমিল): Two verse lines rhyming together at the end.
50. Blank Verse (অন্ত্যমিলহীন; অমিত্রাক্ষর): Blank verse is a kind of verse having no rhyming end.
51. Free Verse (মুক্তক ছন্দক): Poetry without a regular rhythm or rhyme or meter. It means, poetry whose lines do not have a regular pattern.
52. Iambic Pentameter (পাঁচমাত্রা বিশিষ্ট কবিতা): A line of verse with five metrical feet, each consisting of one short syllable followed by one long syllable.
53. Dactyl (তিন মাত্রা বিশিষ্ট ছন্দ): A metrical feet of three syllables of which the first one is stressed and the last two are unstressed.
54. Personification (ব্যক্তিরূপে প্রকাশ): Personification is a figure of speech in which lifeless objects or ideas are given imaginary life.
55. Onomatopoeia (অনুকার শব্দ): A figure in which the sound of the words and phrases suggests the sense.
56. Denouement (অন্তিম দৃশ্য): The final scene of a drama or fiction in which all the problems are solved.
57. Epigram: A brief and witty statement which is apparently self-contradictory. (যেমন: ঘোড়ায় চড়িয়া মত্য হাঁটিল) Episode (কোনো দীর্ঘ ঘটনার পর্ব): A part of a larger story or a larger sequence.
58. Poetic justice (আদর্শ বিচার; স্বাভাবিক বিচার): The natural judgment which gives the wicked his due punishment and virtuous his due reward.
59. Plot (সাহিত্যে কোনো ঘটনাপরম্পরার পরিকল্পনা বা রূপরেখা: The logical arrangement of events designed to excite curiosity or suspense.
60. Theme (সাহিত্যের কেন্দ্রীয় ধারণা; মূল বিষয়বস্তু): The central idea of a literary work.
61. Digression (মূল প্রসঙ্গ থেকে বিচ্যুতি): To move away from the main subject or theme.
62. Fantasy (অলীক কল্পনা): A fantasy is an imaginary story.
63. Fiction (কল্পিত গল্প, উপন্যাস, রোমান্স কাহিনি): A fiction is an imaginary story.
64. Foot (পদতল): Foot is a basic unit of meter in a poem.
65. Tale (গল্প): A story about imaginary events or people; often involving magic or exciting events.

68. Parable (নীতিবাক্য): A parable is a short didactic story that is meant to teach a moral or principle lesson.
69. Farce (প্রহসন): Farce is form low comedy designed to provoke laughter.
70. Lampoon (কোনো ব্যক্তিকে তীব্রভাবে ব্যঙ্গ করে রচিত কোনো রচনা): A harsh satire usually directed against an individual or an organization.
71. Satire (ব্যঙ্গরসাত্মক): Satire is a way of criticizing people or ideas in a humorous way.
72. Mock-epic (উপহাসমূলক মহাকাব্য): Mock-epic is a long satirical poem dealing with a trivial theme.
73. Comic Relief ট্রোজেডিতে দুঃখ ভোলাতে হাসিরসাত্মক দৃশ্য): Comic Relief is a humorous scene in a tragedy to eliminate the tragic effect from audience.
74. Linguistic (ভাষাবিজ্ঞান): The scientific and systematic study of a language.
75. Diction (শব্দচয়ন): The choice and use of words in literature.
