It is with a heavy heart and profound sorrow that the Department of English, Sylhet International University, mourns the passing of Professor Sunil Kanti Debnath, retired Professor of English, Kamalganj Government College, Moulvibazar and the beloved father of our dear colleague Swati Rani Debnath, Assistant Professor, Department of English.
Professor Debnath belonged to a generation of teachers who regarded education not merely as a profession but as a lifelong calling. For decades, he devoted himself to the teaching of English literature, nurturing young minds with patience, wisdom, and sincerity. His deep love for literature was reflected in the way he livedโquietly, thoughtfully, and gracefully. He found beauty in books, joy in learning, and meaning in the simple things of life.
Those who knew him will remember a man of gentle manners, refined taste, and profound humanity. He carried himself with humility and dignity, yet his thoughts were lofty, his vision broad, and his love for knowledge unwavering.
Today, as we mourn his loss, we also celebrate a life well livedโa life dedicated to teaching, learning, and inspiring others. His absence will be deeply felt, but his memory will remain alive in the hearts of his family, friends, students, and all who were fortunate enough to know him.
At this moment of grief, we stand beside our colleague Swati Rani Debnath and her family, sharing in their sorrow and offering our heartfelt prayers and condolences.
The words of John Keats seem especially meaningful today:
โA thing of beauty is a joy for ever.โ
Indeed, Professor Sunil Kanti Debnath's life was such a beautyโmarked by wisdom, simplicity, compassion, and a lifelong devotion to literature.
Though he has left this earthly world, the values he cherished and the lives he touched will continue to inspire generations to come.
May the Almighty grant eternal peace to his noble soul and give strength and comfort to his bereaved family during this difficult time.
