Before You Leave SGC
Sylhet Government College was only a very short chapter of our lives. So short, in fact, that we barely had the time to realize we were living it.
Unlike school life, college never really felt like a place where we spent most of our days. For many of us, the college campus was mostly a place we came to for exams. And honestly, a lot of our memories of SGC are probably built around those exam days, the rush before entering the hall, the nervousness, the familiar faces, the conversations in between, and then going back home.
But everyone had their own little version of SGC.
For some, it was the bus rides to and from college. For those involved in sports, perhaps the field holds a completely different collection of memories. For the ones who were part of debate or other clubs, there are moments that may still live somewhere in those spaces. For the students who stayed in the hostel, the hostel itself probably has a whole story of its own. And for the few who came to college more regularly, maybe they have memories of SGC that go far beyond exams and academic days.
Maybe that is what made our college life different. We didn't all experience SGC in the same way.
And if we're being completely honest, most of us probably never had the same kind of attachment to college that we had to school. There weren't countless everyday memories. There weren't years of feeling like the campus was our second home. Academic pressure, exams, coaching, and everything that came with HSC life often left us with very little time to actually stop and feel any of it.
Yet somehow, towards the end, something changed.
Maybe it was during the last test exams. Maybe it was at the farewell. Maybe it was during those final days of the HSC examinations. Somewhere along the way, SGC started feeling a little more like our own. Just a little.
Even going to Tilagor while we were still college students had its own kind of charm. And then there was the campus itself.
It may not have been the most fancy or sophisticated campus. But it had something that couldn't really be built or designed a quiet, natural beauty of its own. The greenery, the open spaces, the silence, the familiar paths… maybe we didn't appreciate them enough while we were there. But now that we're leaving, we know we'll miss them somehow.
The strange part is, we still don't know exactly what we'll miss.
Maybe some of us won't miss SGC at all. Maybe some will. Maybe years from now, a random bus ride, an exam hall, a field, a familiar corner of the campus, or even a simple photograph will suddenly bring all of this back.
We don't really know what SGC will mean to us in the years to come.
But maybe it doesn't have to mean something huge.
Maybe SGC will simply remain somewhere in a quiet corner of our lives a short, imperfect, ordinary chapter that we didn't realize was becoming a memory until it was already over.
And maybe, that's enough.
Before we leave SGC, here's to all the little moments we didn't know we'd miss.
SGC'26 - the end of a chapter.
