It is ironical how a man who thought randomness could be calculated in probabilistically mathematical way later resorted to existentialism and philosophy to satiate his lacking understanding of the world. Blaise Pascal was a man of contradiction who thought the world's fundamental to be incoherent and out of reach of human understanding yet he strived more to understand the lackings of it all. On one hand, he wanted absolute, empirical proof, proving that vacuums could exist and defining how fluids behave under pressure. On the other hand, he looked at the infinite cosmos and realized that human logic has its limits, ultimately framing his famous "𝑾𝒂𝒈𝒆𝒓" as a matter of infinite risk management.
Nowhere is this balance of simplicity and complexity clearer than in 𝑷𝒂𝒔𝒄𝒂𝒍’𝒔 𝑻𝒓𝒊𝒂𝒏𝒈𝒍𝒆. To a child, it might just look like a pyramid of simple addition, but to a mathematician, it is an elegant pattern that connects combinatorics, binomial expansions, and probability theory. Ironically, this entire foundation of math only came about because his friend wanted to edge out the competition in a game of dice.
Today, 𝑵𝒐𝒕𝒓𝒆 𝑫𝒂𝒎𝒆 𝑴𝒂𝒕𝒉 𝑪𝒍𝒖𝒃 honors the brilliant, conflicted mind of Blaise Pascal. He gave us the Pascal unit for pressure, the world's first functional mechanical calculator, and a mathematical triangle that never runs out of secrets. He reminded us that we are all thinking reeds–fragile, but capable of measuring the universe.
