𝐇𝐎𝐖 𝐙𝐄𝐑𝐎 𝐂𝐇𝐀𝐍𝐆𝐄𝐃 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐖𝐎𝐑𝐋𝐃
𝐁𝐲 𝐓𝐚𝐡𝐦𝐢𝐝 𝐇𝐚𝐬𝐚𝐧 (𝟏𝟐𝟕𝟎𝟏𝟎𝟎𝟔)

• WHAT IS ZERO
Zero is a number representing an empty quantity. Adding or subtracting zero from any number leaves that number unchanged. But it still has value. The invention of zero has made a radical change in all fields of mathematics.

• HISTORY BEFORE THE INVENTION OF ZERO
Zero was not a number—it was a condition. The Greeks, Romans, and lots of others used an abacus of some sort to do computations. Mayans in Central America had their own zero symbol for their calendar. Ancient China used spaces in counting rods to represent zero but didn't treat it as a number.

• HOW ZERO WAS INVENTED
The true invention of zero as both a placeholder and a number occurred in ancient India. Around the 5th century CE, the Indian mathematician and astronomer 𝐀𝐫𝐲𝐚𝐛𝐡𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐚 used a symbol for zero. However, it was 𝐁𝐫𝐚𝐡𝐦𝐚𝐠𝐮𝐩𝐭𝐚, another Indian mathematician, who formalized the use of zero in 628 CE. 𝐁𝐫𝐚𝐡𝐦𝐚𝐠𝐮𝐩𝐭𝐚 described zero as a number and laid out rules for arithmetic operations involving zero, such as addition, subtraction, and multiplication.

• HOW IT SPREAD ALL OVER THE WORLD
In the 9th century, during the intellectual flourishing of the Islamic golden age, zero became fully integrated into mathematics. From India, the concept of zero spread to the Islamic world. This critical development was spearheaded by the Persian scholar 𝐌𝐮𝐡𝐚𝐦𝐦𝐚𝐝 𝐈𝐛𝐧 𝐌𝐮𝐬𝐚 𝐀𝐥-𝐊𝐡𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐳𝐦𝐢. Al Khwarizmi, often regarded as the father of algebra, helped popularize the decimal system, which relied heavily on the use of zero.

Next, 𝐅𝐢𝐛𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐜𝐜𝐢 also known as 𝐋𝐞𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐫𝐝𝐨 𝐨𝐟 𝐏𝐢𝐬𝐚, who carried the torch of zero and the Hindu-Arabic decimal system of Al Khwarizmi, and brought it to Europe.

• THE SIGNIFICANCE OF USING ZERO
The use of zero has changed the world as we see it today. By the induction of zero in the number system, radical changes in mathematics were observed, which are-
• Negative integers were developed.
• The concept of infinity was developed.
• The rise of calculus was seen, which is most widely used in predicting things from the covid-19 case curve to stock market prediction.

Without zero, numbers like 101, 200, or 5000 would be unreadable or confusing. As zero acts as a placeholder and a number, it gives structure and clarity to our number system.

The invention of zero was not a singular event but a journey across cultures and centuries. From its humble beginnings as a placeholder in 𝐁𝐚𝐛𝐲𝐥𝐨𝐧𝐢𝐚𝐧 scripts to its elevation as a number in India, zero has shaped the way we think, calculate and innovate. It is a testament to humanity's quest for knowledge and the ability to find meaning even in the void. So, the next time you write a zero, remember—you are holding a symbol of human ingenuity and a bridge to endless possibilities.

Born on 3 𝐒𝐞𝐩𝐭𝐞𝐦𝐛𝐞𝐫 1814 in London, England, James Joseph Sylvester was a pioneering mathematician whose work transformed algebra, number theory, and matrix theory.

He made fundamental contributions to invariants, determinants, and matrix theory, and introduced the term “matrix” into mathematics. His Law of Inertia remains a cornerstone of linear algebra.

As the first mathematics professor at Johns Hopkins University, Sylvester also founded the American Journal of Mathematics, leaving a lasting mark on mathematical research and education.

পদার্থবিজ্ঞান বইয়ের “ভৌতজগৎ ও পরিমাপ” অধ্যায়ের নামটা দেখেই অনেকে সেটি এড়িয়ে যায়। অথচ পদার্থবিজ্ঞানের এর সবচেয়ে অবহেলিত অধ্যায়টাই হয়তো এর সবচেয়ে মৌলিক অধ্যায়।

At first glance, the art of counting seems like trying to navigate a maze with an infinite number of paths, each one leading to more possibilities. But sometimes there is order in the chaos, and combinatorics is the branch of mathematics that makes sense of all those myriad possibilities.

On 𝟐𝟎𝐭𝐡 𝐌𝐚𝐲 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔, 𝐌𝐝 𝐑𝐚𝐟𝐬𝐚𝐧 𝐒𝐨𝐛𝐡𝐚𝐧 (12709076) conducted a session on 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐁𝐚𝐫𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐨𝐫𝐞𝐦 explaining the theorem’s basics and how it can be used to solve more complex counting problems, expanding on the theory and practice of the application of the method in mathematical problems and Olympiad-style tasks.

The complete 𝐬𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐫𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 is now available, offering an opportunity to revisit the concepts, and explore how a simple arrangement of stars and bars can reveal structure within a seemingly endless space of possibilities.

কখনো ভেবে দেখেছ কেন নির্দিষ্ট কিছু জ্যামিতিক সমস্যা সমাধান করতে গিয়ে আমাদের ভিন্ন ভিন্ন configuration এর জন্য ভিন্ন ভিন্ন প্রমাণ করতে হয়? কখনো কি মনে হয়েছে একটা মাত্র চিত্র ব্যবহার করেই যদি সকল configuration এর জন্য প্রমাণ করা সম্ভব হত?

সাধারণ কোণের সীমাবদ্ধতাকে এড়িয়ে ১৮০ ডিগ্রী কে একটি পূর্ণ চক্র বিবেচনা করে 𝐃𝐢𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐀𝐧𝐠𝐥𝐞 বিভিন্ন configuration কে একই framework এর মধ্যে নিয়ে আসে। ফলে প্রমাণ হয় আরও মার্জিত, সংক্ষিপ্ত এবং সাবলীল।

আমাদের ম্যাথ ক্লাবের অত্যন্ত প্রতিভাবান ও গণিত-অনুরাগী সদস্য ফাহিম সাদাত (১২৭০৬০৬৪) তার চমৎকার প্রবন্ধ "ডাইরেক্টেড অ্যাঙ্গেল"-এ এই গুরুত্বপূর্ণ কৌশলটির মৌলিক ধারণা থেকে বিভিন্ন অলিম্পিয়াড সমস্যার সমাধানের মাধ্যমে এর ব্যবহার অত্যন্ত সুন্দরভাবে তুলে ধরেছেন।

জ্যামিতিক configuration পরিবর্তনের সাথে বারবার proof সাজানোর জটিলতা এড়াতে Directed Angle-এর এই লেখাটি গণিতপ্রেমী ও অলিম্পিয়াড শিক্ষার্থীদের জন্য একটি চমৎকার সূচনা হতে পারে।
