✒️ New publication alert!
CUH-member André Klaassen has recently published a new article titled 'Subways and Citizens: Negotiating Citizenship through Greater Stockholm's Subway System (1950s–1970s)' in the Journal of Modern European History!
The article explores how Stockholm's modern and expanding subway system—initially heralded as a place of civic unity and inclusion—also functioned as a space to formulate, challenge, and negotiate the terms and conditions of modern urban welfare citizenship. From artistic murals spreading socialist messages to disciplinary measures shaping passenger conduct, and countercultural groups turning stations and carts into sites of resistance, the subway reveals how mundane infrastructure and practices were and are deeply political.
