My name is Shana Hazboun, I’m 21 years old and I’m an international student coming from Palestine. I am currently in my second year of the Bachelors of the Social Science.
When I’m not studying, working, interning, or traveling, you will find me making a stance on many of the issues that bother me. Growing up in Palestine, you are automatically inclined to be vocal and to make sure that your voice is heard by many, because for many generations we were (and still are) suppressed.
On a more practical note, this is not my first international experience nor is it my first experience running for student council. I have been an ambassador of Palestine in many exchanges all around the world, from New York, to Munich, to Australia. But the international experience that opened my eyes to the world and what it meant to be a global citizen happened in my international boarding school, where I lived with people from 60+ nationalities for 2 years while completing an IB Diploma program. This experience was so eyeopening, that a few friends of mine and I decided to create a gap year program at that school and volunteer there for another year. We spent a year learning about pedagogy and education, while offering a helping hand and a listening ear to many of the students there.
I made sure my voice was heard even when the issues my peers and I were facing were not so harsh. Therefore, I managed to successfully be elected twice for the 2 times I ran for student council at my middle school. But now in university, issues are becoming more heartfelt and we’re dealing with issues that concern the long term. That’s why I decided to run for student council after encountering a long, and frustrating experience with meldpunt and I realized that things must change for our SAFETY, INCLUSION, and for better COMMUNICATION.
